Transgender Awareness Week – celebrated annually in November – is a crucial time to uplift the voices and experiences of the transgender community through education and action, sharing stories and experiences, and evolving support around the issues of prejudice, discrimination, and violence that affect the transgender community.
The week’s activities culminate on November 20th, Transgender Day of Remembrance, a day in which transgender people and allies across the globe come together to honour the lives lost to anti-transgender violence.
This Transgender Awareness Week, the Association of Women in Yachting speaks to Pippa Nicholas and Christie Henderson about their transitions and lives in the yachting industry.
We want to talk about the difference between how yachting treats men and women, and having lived as both a man and a woman during their careers in the industry, Pippa and Christie are in a unique position to be able to compare both experiences. Are women treated differently? Are they afforded fewer opportunities?
We also want to shine a light on the transgender community within yachting. We want to know if people treat them differently post-transition, do they think it’s because they’re women, or because they’re trans women? Is it misogyny or transphobia that makes people treat them differently to how they treated them before their transitions?
We asked them how can Yachting do better. How can the industry improve the female experience, be it for cisgender or transgender women, and how can it change to embrace the LGBTQ+ community?
