EP19 – Bro, I’m Stressed

In this episode, Anton and Ola discuss stress a feeling both podcasters are currently living right now.
Stress is a normal part of life and is usually described as the feelings a people experience when the demands made on them are greater than their ability to cope.

What causes stress?

Major life changes can create stress such as a special event such as a birthday, wedding, or meeting. It leaves us with a feeling that we haven’t got everything under control.

Often stress is related to the workplace whether it is high workload, being unemployed but also extends to finances, bereavement, family, relationship etc.

What are the symptoms?

Stress can affect all aspects of your life, including your emotions, behaviour, thinking ability and physical health.

Emotionally:-

  • Overwhelmed
  • Irritable and ‘wound up’
  • Anxious or fearful
  • Lacking in self esteem

Mentally

  • Racing thoughts
  • Constant worrying
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Difficulty making decisions

Physically

  • Headaches
  • Muscle tension or pain
  • Dizziness
  • Sleep problems
  • Feeling tired all the time
  • Eating too much or too little

Stress that continues without relief can lead to a condition called distress, a negative stress reaction. Distress can lead to physical problems including headaches, upset stomach, elevated blood pressure, chest pain and trouble sleeping. Research suggests that stress can also bring on or worsen certain symptoms or diseases.

Dealing with it?

A human body is designed to experience stress and react to it. Stress can be positive, keeping you alert and ready to avoid danger. Stress becomes negative when a person faces continuous challenges without relief or relaxation between challenges.

It’s important to tackle the causes of stress in your life if you can. Avoiding problems rather than facing them can make things worse.

Stress also becomes harmful when people turn to alcohol, tobacco, or drugs to try to relieve their stress. Unfortunately, instead of relieving the stress and returning the body to a relaxed state, these substances tend to keep the body in a stressed state and cause more problems.

  • Take time out
  • Practice Mindfulness
  • Book a spa Treatment
  • Get some well-deserved sleep
  • Adopt good routines
  • Exercise is a good way to combat stress
  • Humour, go watch a film or a show
  • Reorganisation and prioritise
  • Music
  • share your problems with family or friends
  • Make more time for your interests and hobbies

Anxiety UK strongly advises that people seek further information and guidance from their GP who will be able to make a formal diagnosis.
