In 1941 in England, despite the war, for Robert Drover (played by Hugh Grant) relatively speaking all is well. He is in love with a wonderful young woman but this soon presents a problem for his mother, Kathleen (played by Dorothy Tutin). This burgeoning love leads her to reminisce about her own first love, a dashing RAF pilot who was killed in 1916. She can’t explain it, but she keeps thinking she’s seeing him everywhere. And then, one day, when visiting her London house, she is shocked to find a fresh note, signed off by her long dead lover...
