This week, inspired by a quote from Eleanor Roosevelt, I ponder the value that society places on one of the most toxic behaviors around communication - gossip. Let’s be clear - we all have done or do it. Everyone. So let’s take a deep breath. The person who truly and honestly NEVER does is a rare creature indeed. It’s not new behavior - people have talked about others probably since we started talking.
And before you say “BUT CATHY” … yeah, I get it. Of COURSE in conversation people will come up. I’m not talking about THAT. You all know precisely what kind of talking I’m talking about. And again, we’ve all done it. And today it’s been turned into currency - with a value that has a huge cost. Social and societal well being.
In a world where what passes for radical honesty usually means someone is just letting things fly outta their pie-hole without much care for others, it’s time for radically authentic conversation.
