In this episode, I address some of the issues that impact many Indigenous students attending education systems off the reserves and I talk about certain factors that either support or hinder Indigenous students. As a Blackfoot teacher, I share my experiences, and my knowledge on these important matters that affect Indigenous people in these education systems. I also address the racism that is deeply embedded in off-reserve education systems that Indigenous educators encounter. I share how non-Indigenous educators working in these education systems can and need to do better so Indigenous students, Indigenous families, Indigenous communities and Indigenous employees will feel welcomed and how school cultures have an important part in ending racism towards Indigenous people in education systems. It is imperative that Indigenous people are at the table making decisions around curriculum, programming, and leadership; this episode unpacks how that looks and what education systems need to do appropriately so Indigenous students thrive and have a positive, healthy experience in education systems.
