Verna Volker, is from the Navajo Nation who overcame many obstacles in her life with an attitude that anyone can overcome life's challenges and how important it is to move our bodies. Verna is a mother, a wife, a teacher, an Ultramarathon runner and the founder of Native Women Running, an organization that encourages and features Native women runners in the running community on and off the reservation. Verna's personal journey and introduction to the world of running was ignited by her goals to get healthy and as an outlet to relieve stress and connect with the land of her ancestors. In our conversation, Verna shares how running has changed her life and how Native Women Running creates space and promotes the visibility of Native women who run. Verna shares her safety tips for women who run and how her organization helps create awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls with their annual run and by sharing the stories of many Indigenous women on her Instagram Page @nativewomenrunning. The resilience and compassion Verna Volker, is a warrior woman who speaks with wisdom and her story is telling of how strong Native women are and how special their roles are in healing and leading their communities.
