This episode is the second of many on the new series: Searching the Scriptures. Searching the Scriptures is a series where I will be going through content that I taught to some students at my church on the development of the Bible and hermeneutics (how we read the Bible). While the class is about the Bible as a whole, it is more focused on the Hebrew Bible (/Old Testament/TaNaKh); in this series, we will go through the following: Harmful Hermeneutics The Composition of the Bible The History of the Bible The Literature of the Bible The Cosmos of the Bible Searching the Scriptures Today The Hebrew Bible is not trying to reproduce in literature what it would be like to review all of its stories as if they were video camera footage. The authors of the Hebrew Bible, in fact, had little concern for the strict literalism that many Christians today hold to because of their misunderstanding of what type of history the Bible is telling. Historically, Christians and Jews have held to a view of biblical history much different from our own. This episode speaks to what that history actually is and how we can better understand it.
