The Penn State football team opens up spring practice this week with the first of 15 practices on Tuesday evening. To preview the spring period, we’re discussing what fans should expect from both sides of the ball on today’s BWI Live Show. We’ll go over several players who should benefit from offensive coordiantor Andy Kotelnicki’s scheme and how the offense will feel different this upcoming season. We’ll finish the show by discussing the camp battles that will determine the personality of the Penn State defense.

Penn State offensive vibe shift under Andy Kotelnicki

We start today’s show by discussing the Penn State offense. We’ve discussed several of the different ways that Kotelnicki will bring a new dynamic to the Lion’s offense this upcoming season, but today, we’re highlighting the players who stand to benefit the most from his system. If you missed it, we’re discussing the article from earlier this week that outlined three positions or players that will see additional support. We highlight one particular position on the show.

The bottom line is that Kotelnicki was excellent at manufacturing explosive plays from slot targets. When Kansas’ quarterbacks targeted players who lined up in the slot, the team averaged an explosive play on 24% of those snaps. Even from a non-rate perspective, Kansas produced 26 explosive passing plays compared to Penn State’s 15. They did that on 16 fewer passing attempts just to drive the point home.

Lastly, we cover the team’s defensive shift under new Penn State defensive coordinator Tom Allen. Today’s show details the spring camp battles determining the defense’s personality. The position battles in camp aren’t just about which players win battles locally but how that player stacks up to other positions on the roster. We preview the larger battle for the final starting spot and which players will represent their position for the right to play in the base defense.
