Welcome to the CG Chatter Podcast episode #6! In this episode I chat with Sergio Villegas, a CG Generalist (Specialization in 3D camera matchmove) at Zero VFX in Boston. Sergio is a very talented and hardworking person who has gone far in his career through strong dedication to his craft combined with taking it upon himself to build strong relationships and proactively seek new challenges and opportunities. We talk about his career including his work at Zero VFX, and he provides an awesome breakdown of some technical aspects of his work on Southpaw starring Jake Gyllenhaal. It was also interesting to hear about Sergio’s background in classical violin and interest in getting into repairing and creating violins. Enjoy!

Highlights include:

  • Sergio’s background in classical violin
  • His explorations in repairing and making violins, including refining the production process using a computer
  • What started his interest in computer graphics
  • The value of going through a full degree program
  • His path to ending up at Zero VFX and the value of networking + following up
  • The importance of passion
  • What it means to be a CG Generalist specializing in 3D camera matchmove
  • Rotoscoping vs. blue/green screen
  • The important role of Nerf guns in the office
  • Benefits of being a “generalist” when working as a VFX artist
  • Sergio breaks down his work on Southpaw including the construction of sweat-spewing 3D geometry tracked to different parts of Jake Gyllenhaal’s head (see below in the “Featured Work” section)
  • The role of compositors in making a shot look real
  • Importance of creating time for fitness and hanging out with friends
  • Wedding planning!
  • Sergio breaks down his work on “The Impaler” (see below in the “Featured Work” section)
