A United Kingdom Royal Commission was raised in response to growing public mistrust after the mishandling of four, high-profile convictions led to a scathing review and significant overhaul of the criminal justice system.

Following three years of investigation in 2017, Bill Rowlings published an article estimating that of the 40,000 people in Australian jails today, between 297-329 are innocent.
