Summary:
Mr Bennet has spent the past few weeks carefully studying over a letter that he replied to from a Mr Collins. Mr Collins is set to inherit the Longborn estate and is also to come to supper this evening with the goal to bury the hatchet between Mr Bennet and Mr Collins’ deceased father. Mrs Bennet though first against this man’s visit, seems less sceptical after Mr Bennet reads his letter aloud. The girls are curious about the man, most of all Elizabeth, and she asks her father what he thinks of the man. Mr Bennet is unsure, but very curious.
At 4pm, Mr Collins arrives, and Mrs bennet sets immediately to accosting him about his inheritance. After this, he goes around the house and looks at everything with an air of already owning it. At dinner, he complements the cooking, and on being told that the Longborn estate can indeed keep a cook, he apologises profusely for having thought the opposite.
