This week we are starting our Fruit of the Spirit Series, talking first about Love and how to demonstrate Godly love in our lives and leadership. Galatians 5 describes the Fruit of the Spirit as Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, and Self Control. In other words, these are characteristics that should be evident in our lives when we are allowing the Holy Spirit to work through us. As we grow stronger in our relationship with Christ, and seek to be more like him and led by Him, it should be obvious to those within our sphere of influence. Living by the Spirit looks very different than living by the flesh. It is no accident that Love is the first to be referenced.

The love spoken of in Galatians chapter 5 comes from the Greek “agape”, which means a love that seeks the highest possible welfare of others (John 15:12-14). This love is not a feeling, it is an action. It is manifested as service to others. This is the very cornerstone of Servant Leadership…serving.

This kind of love is unconditional. Deserving of it or not, we are to demonstrate agape love in our words and actions toward others. It is a commitment to the well-being of those we serve.
