By now, you all know how strongly I feel about creating marketing that partners with your body for creativity rather than ignoring its needs for the sake of productivity. But I also feel strongly about creating marketing that doesn’t hurt anyone else’s body either.

I feel so strongly about this that I actually will not take on clients in the diet or weight loss industries. Because with just a litttttlllleee bit of investigation, it’s easy to see that our culture’s strange obsession with defining “health” as thinness is based on some pretty shakey science, and some pretty unkind attitudes towards people who did nothing to deserve being judged and discriminated against due to the size and shape of their bodies.

So, let’s strive to make marketing that sparks body love, inclusivity, and acceptance rather than fatphobia.

Joining me to discuss just how to do that is the marvelous Keri Emme, the Naked Body Coach and creator and host of the fabulous Closer Together podcast.

Why You’re Definitely Losing Customers If Your Marketing Isn’t Size-Inclusive

Trigger Warning: I’m citing some statistics here that use some harmful language. Also, popular conceptions of “overweight” and “obese” using the BMI are based on some questionable science.

🍓The average clothing size of an American woman is 16-18 - a size range often considered “plus size”

🍓 According to data from the 2017-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey:

  • Nearly 1 in 3 adults (30.7%) are overweight.
  • More than 1 in 3 men (34.1%) and more than 1 in 4 women (27.5%) are overweight.
  • More than 2 in 5 adults (42.4%) have obesity (including severe obesity).
  • About 1 in 11 adults (9.2%) have severe obesity.
