Have you ever found yourself overthinking and softening your language in emails, meetings, conversations, or voice and text messages...

So that other people wouldn’t perceive you as being a pain in the ass, or too needy, or too bossy, or too whatever the feck’?

How about over-explaining yourself almost as a preemptive apology - instead of just answering with a direct yes or no?

Are you familiar with often disclaiming yourself, your ideas, your work or your words in advance?

In my writing workshops, I often hear people (but especially women) do this “thing” before they share what they wrote with the rest of the group.

Before they read a single word of their work, they start out with a rush of disclaimers; saying things like...

“Well, I just wrote this really fast” - or- “We didn't have a ton of time” - or - “This still needs polishing” - or - "This isn't very good, but..."

This is one of the reasons why we encourage no explaining, or disclaimers because those statements are not reflective of the brilliant writing that they inevitably go on to read!

It’s that double-edged sword of wanting to be seen, and wanting to share yourself and your work, but also being afraid of being seen and how your nervous system responds to it!

Today on The Karen Kenney Show, I’m inviting you to stop apologizing in advance. Stop over explaining, and putting up disclaimers before sharing amazing YOU and your art, your words, your work or your skills, whatever they may be.

Your point of view is worthy and your creativity and your ideas are needed in the world!

So please… Speak up. Have your own back. Have the backs of other women and people.

And, let's be in the habit of saying what we actually mean!

KK's Takeaways:
