One of the critical skills in personal growth and development is the ability to create dialogue in communication. Our current cancel culture is a great example of our failure as a society to maintain civility and respect for one another. The purpose of dialogue as defined by Webster's is "seeking mutual understanding". Dialogue doesn't just happen, we have to be intentional about it. At the root of dialogue is the ability to to suspend judgment and refrain from the eagerness to fight for our own convictions and instead seek to understand the viewpoint of others. Empathy, the ability to think someone else's thoughts and feel someone else's feelings, is indispensable to dialogue. To do this we must develop certain skills but also it is an act of the will.
