All of us have either been impacted by cancer or know someone that has. It is one of the leading causes of death and morbidity worldwide. What are the various ways to treat cancer? What is radiation therapy? How is proton therapy emerging as a promising form of radiation therapy to treat cancer? These are some of the questions that Dr. Sameer Keole will be elucidating in this episode.
Dr. Keole is the Medical Director of the proton beam therapy program at the Mayo Clinic in Arizona where he also serves as consultant. He is an Assistant Professor of Radiation Oncology at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine. Dr. Keole has worked with proton beam therapy throughout his career and in the treatment of more than 900 patients. In addition, he was Medical Director of the ProCure Proton Therapy Center in Oklahoma City and an adjunct Assistant Professor at Oklahoma University Health Science Center. He also has been an Assistant Professor in the Florida Proton Therapy Institute, Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Florida in Jacksonville, and an Assistant Professor at the Shands Cancer Center, Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Florida, Gainesvile. Dr. Keole’s research interests include image guidance and motion management. His disease site interests are in pediatric, central nervous system, genitourinary and breast malignancies. Dr. Keole is board certified in radiation oncology. He serves as the Government Relations Council Chair of the American Society for Therapeutic Radiation and Oncology. He is a cofounder of the Proton Collaborative Group (PCG), which was the multi-institutional group to launch proton-specific clinical trials and a prospective patient registry. Dr. Keole has published peer-reviewed articles, book chapters and abstracts on radiation oncology topics, including proton beam therapy.
