Emerging technologies are hotbeds for detrimental hype and speculation often grounded in deep misconceptions of the subject technologies and dubious narratives that set increasingly exaggerated expectations. Some will argue that hype is good. They argue that it is necessary to draw interest and investment in “innovation”. Without it the invention economy cannot run. Is this truly the case? Is that what we are seeing today with hyped tech such as blockchain/crypto and herds of unicorn ventures that have imploded in spectacular fashion?
Leonard Lee of neXt Curve is joined by Dr. Jeffrey Funk, renowned technology consultant and professor to talk about hype and its role in innovation and detriment.
This webcast will address the following topics:

  • The role of hype in innovation.
  • The Hype Cycle and the Hump of Nonsense.
  • The culture of speculation and detrimental hype.
  • Consequences and implications of detrimental hype and speculation.
