You could 100% do my job. No, I'm being serious. At the risk of making myself or my work sound dumb (oh well!), I'll just say this-- this business is not rocket science! I'm sure it looks like "I have it all together" or "I was destined for this" or even "I had a head start," but here's the real deal Holyfield, and potentially a not-so-earth-shattering secret: I. Am. Just. Like. You. I am just like you. I wake up in the morning and have bad breath. I crave chocolate. I'm wildly unorganized. I get in fights with my boyfriend about how slowly he pumps gas. I have succumbed to a 6-hour binge-watching session of One Tree Hill. I've been fired from a job that I hated. I'm afraid of bugs. I am not a superhero. But I am a fast learner. So here's the secret to my "success" (remember, "success" should only be defined by you!!): Take action. Learn quickly. Make changes. Take more action. Rinse and repeat. There's honestly not much more to it than that. Trust me... you can even ask my mom. I was recently honored as one of the top performers on the organizational side of my business. Apparently working with over 30 companies (aka, getting more than 30 people to say "yes") in your first 18 months of work is rather impressive. I was unaware of this, and simply plugging away at work here in Dallas, when I was contacted by the Mother Ship in Boston and asked to be on a panel during our global meeting last week. "We want you to be on a panel of top performers," they said. "Um... why?" I was confused. No one around me seemed all that impressed. Why should they be? "Well, you've done something that almost no other associate has ever been able to accomplish," they replied. "Oh, you mean go over 18 months without going to the dentist?!" I was sure I had it, now. "Um, no. Not quite. 30+ accounts is a great accomplishment, and we want you to share your insights on the panel." I panicked. Insights?! What insights?! Most days talk about running a business the way Kurt Vonnegut used to talk about writing: When I write, I feel like an armless, legless man with a crayon in his mouth. But I was wrong. I had outperformed, and now I had to put on a show. What had made me successful? How had I gotten off to such a fast start? When did I know I had "made it"? That was a personal favorite because of how much it made me laugh. No one ever "knows" they've made it. There always another "it" to get to. Anyway, after a lot of thought, I put together these 7 strategies for starting anything new, and I wanted to share them with you today. Whether you're starting a business, starting a new relationship, starting a new life in a new city with new friends and a new place to live... no matter what you're doing in life or what you wish you were doing in life... these 7 proven strategies will help you get up and running more quickly and "successfully" than you could ever imagine. I hope they serve you as much as they've served me, even though I had no idea I was doing them at the time! I promise you'll be that much better off for it. Enjoy!
