Have you ever wondered what to do if you have so many different ideas and passions that you’re not sure how to get started choosing a niche? My guest, Paula Engebretson, can relate. And she just might be able to help you find more focus, too. Paula is a Certified Life Coach and productivity fanatic. She helps fellow ADHDers take action, finish what they start, and work with their brains to create the life they want. And as with many coaches, her niche stemmed from her own experiences and challenges. She started out with a PhD in musicology, studying the history of music (which sounds pretty cool). But she struggled with staying focused as a result of yet-undiagnosed ADHD. While searching for time management strategies and other tools to help herself, she discovered life coaching. At the same time, as a professor, Paula saw elements of herself in some of her ADHD students and was diagnosed at the age of 31. So, how did she go from a new diagnosis to coaching others with ADHD? In this episode, Paula tells us all about how she started using blogging (and later a podcast) as a creative outlet, sharing time management, productivity and focus solutions that had worked for her…even before she realized ADHD was a part of the picture. Not surprisingly, many of the clients who came to her for this sort of help happened to have ADHD diagnoses, as well. So, her messaging evolved to fit her people. And a niche was born. There is so much goodness in this conversation, and I think everyone will relate to something here. We dive into: How ADHD presents differently in different genders and age groups, as well as differences between individuals. Some of the common challenges for people with ADHD. The concept of “scaffolding” yourself with skills and support to help hold you up in the areas where you struggle. And why Paula thinks ADHD is more prevalent among entrepreneurs than in the corporate world. Listen in to hear it all! Have you ever wondered how you can turn your own struggle and passion into a successful coaching business that you love? In this episode, I’m speaking with Lisa Salisbury of Well With Lisa. She is a health and weight loss coach for women who have obsessively dieted in the past. The women she works with often feel lost when it comes to losing weight unless they have an app, book, or detailed process to follow. Lisa helps them lose weight by checking in with themselves rather than an app. As is often the case with amazing coaching niches, Lisa’s own journey has led to her niche. I often refer to this as “The Path,” in which you look back on your past experiences to determine who you can best serve now. She coaches on the thing that was a struggle for her and that she overcame herself. Lisa was a “chronic dieter” in her past and even got her friends to join in whatever diet or weight loss trend she was following at the time. She tried a lot of things that didn’t work for her and eventually realized that she was really obsessing over tracking, going so far as to stand in front of the fridge eating at night to get her macros in (even though she wasn’t hungry) and weighing her food at the dinner table. She knew that things weren’t right and she needed to take a step back. An obsession with dieting and healthy eating is accepted within our culture, but it takes such a mental toll. Lisa knew that there were a lot of other women struggling in the same way that she did. What she learned through coaching, and the way she helps her clients now, is that weight loss and wellness aren’t all about the numbers. Your thoughts and feelings about food play a huge role, as well. Lisa and I talk quite a bit about The Model in this episode, developed by Brooke Castillo of the Life Coach School, because it really can apply to any situation, including weight loss. In fact, one of Lisa’s favorite exercises is plugging her client’s scale weight as a circumstance. A numerical fact. “I’m too heavy” is not a circumstance; it’s a thought. This tends to open up a whole new conversation and take away the drama of weighing themselves. Lisa’s clients track their food through simple journaling, and they also dive deeper into the thoughts behind challenges like why they’re eating when they aren’t even hungry. The end result? Women come through the program thinking about food less - less emotional desire for food and less obsessing - and still lose weight! Check out the full podcast episode to hear more of Lisa’s story and her advice for coaches who are still choosing a niche. Have you ever wondered what it’s like to take a career you’ve had for more than 3 decades and turn it into a fabulous niche? I’m so excited to have Wendy Crabbe with me on this episode of the Profitable Niche Podcast. Wendy helps health professionals and women over 50 lose up to 50 pounds so they can feel great in their bodies for another 50 years. We’re talking all about her niche and how it has evolved over time. Wendy’s niche is particularly interesting because she has been able to incorporate 38 years of nursing experience in addition to her personal weight loss journey to help other busy women, nurses and health practitioners lose weight and keep it off. She’s also been through a few different versions of her niche, getting more specific each time on who she can serve best. Wendy first discovered life coaching when she was struggling to lose weight herself. She was tired of dieting and feeling deprived and hungry all the time. She had tried all the things and thought her hormones were to blame. Then, she came across a book by our mentor, Brooke Castillo, called “If I’m So Smart, Why Can’t I Lose Weight?”. It was exactly how Wendy felt in that moment and how so many of her clients feel when they come to her now. She had 2 Masters degrees, worked in health care and still couldn’t figure out how to lose the weight. That year, at the age of 56, Wendy lost 55 pounds. She also experienced transformations far beyond weight loss through working with a coach. And when she figured out ways of losing weight that she’d never seen before, she felt compelled to tell everyone about it. So, she became certified herself. As happens so often with niches, Wendy’s ideal client is really a past version of herself. But her niche has evolved over time, becoming more specific with each new version. She’s sharing her story of how her niche came to be and why she once felt resistant to working with the people who are now her best clients. And, of course, you’ll hear her advice for other life coaches starting out. You don’t want to miss this one! I’m really excited to have Suzanne Dayton and Kacey Hayes of LevelUp Co. on this episode of the podcast. These are the women who support me in having a productive, beautiful business. Basically, Suzanne and Kacey handle all of the back-end details that I don’t want to, and they’re amazing at it! So, I invited them here today to talk about their own niche journey: How they started out individually and how they met, started collaborating and have now created this fantastic business together. They are marketing experts and executive virtual assistants who amplify the voice of coaches and help them save time, increase productivity and grow. We work together every day, but it was so fun to sit down and actually hear the story of how their business and their niche came to be. Hearing where they started and where they are now, there are some common themes. Both women reached out for mentorship and support early in their businesses, and they credit this with being able to move forward more quickly than they could have if they’d waited to get the support later on. They’re also sharing what they think the other’s superpowers are and what they each bring to the table that makes the partnership work so well. This idea of complementing strengths is so powerful and is one you can use whether you work solo or as part of a team. When they share their advice to other entrepreneurs who are figuring out their niche? I was only a little surprised to hear them give the same answer. In fact, it’s a concept that comes up for a lot of my clients, too. And of course, we get into the brain drama that appears in various stages of business. Suzanne and Kacey say that one of the best things about working in partnership and with a team is that they can support each other when that drama comes up. And they’re able to help their clients in this way, too. There is so much goodness in this conversation. I can’t wait for you to hear it! My dear friend, Tinka Markham Piper, of Solve my Space, is a perfect example of combining a mish-mash of experiences to create a unique and impactful niche. In this episode of The Profitable Niche Podcast, Tinka shares her story, her “aha” moment and advice to entrepreneurs struggling with their niche. Tinka is a chaos counselor and space solver, who helps people transform their lives by transforming their homes. She works directly with people in their homes and uses decluttering, organizing and redesign to transform their outer spaces and, in doing so, transform their inner lives. Because when our homes feel good, we feel good. It’s so interesting to hear Tinka talk about how all of her past life and career experiences came together to form her niche. She tells us about moving around the world as a child, reorganizing cabinets when she went to visit family and friends’ homes and using her background in social work, public health and project management to support her clients on so many different levels. When Tinka’s children were very young, she had an “aha” moment. While working in academia, a grad student of hers came in and asked, “would you want your kids to stay in a job they weren’t happy in?” I realized that she wouldn’t and started (that very day), building her business on the weekends. Tinka had felt like she had to keep going in a certain direction because of her education and expectations that she and others had for her. She feared that her new business wasn’t serious or academic enough. That it wasn’t what she was “supposed to” be doing. She may not have known how all the pieces would ultimately come together but took the different elements of her interests, experiences and passion and created this amazing niche. Now, she loves going into people’s homes, supporting them through times of transition, and having deep conversations about how to make their homes reflect and support who they are. Her advice to those still struggling to choose a niche: Really think deeply about what makes you feel good. Be honest with yourself and ignore expectations. What do you really, truly love to do? Don’t be afraid of joy. Just like people feel good when their homes tell a personal story, your niche should reflect your story, as well. Listen in to hear more about her amazing story and niche. Connect with Tinka: For the month of January, Tinka is hosting a challenge and giveaway: “30 days, 30 homes, 30 locations.” Each day, she will answer a home-related question from a different home around the world (spoiler: one of them might be Veronique’s!). Have you ever wondered how someone stuck in really deep niche drama gets themselves unstuck and has a fabulous niche they love? Crystal Haitsma, The Parenting Coach, is here telling us how she did just that. Crystal is a Certified Life Coach and Canadian homeschooling mom of 4. She practices connection-based parenting and helps moms transform their parent-child relationships by focusing on themselves first. She believes that moms often set the tone for the household, so when they the way they respond and connect, it trickles down through the whole family. Powerful stuff! But Crystal wasn’t always so sure about her niche. In fact, she says that in her first year of business she did all the things they tell you NOT to do! And a combination of niche drama and action taking tendencies meant she was taking lots of scattered action without any real direction. Crystal learned about life coaching and immediately jumped into a certification with The Life Coach School. She created a parenting course early on but didn’t feel ready to commit to a niche as a parent coach because she was still in the middle of her own transformation as a mom. So, she created another course on business, then overeating, then a re-vamped business course, emotional intelligence for teens and tweens, launched a membership for moms…you get the idea. After lots of coaching and narrowing down ALL the things, she was down to two - she loved both business and parent coaching and struggled to choose just one. She was interested in so many different things and didn’t want to feel tied down or constrained. She also knew that she was doing too much and to get the results she wanted, she needed focus and simplify her business. It came down to one question… What do I LOVE? What do I feel passionate about? About a year ago, Crystal decided to go all in on parent coaching. No looking back. Today, she still gets teary-eyed when she talks about what she does. She says, “It’s amazing that I get to do this. Being able to change lives and see the transformation is just the best.” Listen in to hear more about Crystal’s niche journey, the amazing work she does with families and her advice to life coaches struggling with their niche. If you’re ready to cut to the chase and get some actionable tips for choosing a niche, this is the episode for you. This week, I’m walking you through the 5 steps you need to take to create a niche that works for you. Deciding on a niche is a process that takes you from point A (no niche and not sure how to get one) to point D (a profitable niche that you LOVE). And if you get stuck on any of those other points in between, you end up spinning or even moving backwards. I want to see to get to where you’re saying “YES! THIS is what is going to work for me. THIS is what I want to do!” It’s all based on these 5 steps: Do an assessment of where you are and where you want to be. Get really clear on how you’re going to manage your brain drama throughout process. Figure out in your past and present which areas you are actually an expert in and that you want to teach people about. Look at your superpowers. Enlist people close to you to help show you what your unique talents are. Sit down and get really curious about how you can weave all those pieces together into a niche that you really love. That last step is where an outside perspective can make all the difference. And it’s why there’s a module called “My Secret Sauce” inside my signature program. Listen to the full episode now to hear a deeper dive into each of these steps and get ready to start your own niche journey. Could your thoughts be impacting your ability to not only choose a niche but be productive in your business? In this episode of The Profitable Niche Podcast, we’re talking about how your thinking can either make things easier or a lot harder for you. As we enter the busy holiday season, it’s the perfect time to look at how we think about these times, what we say to ourselves and if these things are useful. Do you ever catch yourself thinking... There’s no way I can get all of this done. Something’s going to be forgotten. I’m gonna screw it up. I just don’t know where to start. These thoughts are not serving you. If anything, they make you feel even more anxious and stressed. And before you know it, you’re running around trying to do it all rather than focusing on what you really have to do. I see this play out all the time in people who are trying to choose a niche. They tell themselves… I don’t know where to start. I don’t know how to pick a niche. I’ll never figure it out. This is impossible. We ALL have garbage thoughts like these sometimes. But if we buy into them it creates a feedback loop, and we end up spinning instead of planning and taking the actions we need to take. It becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. You tell yourself you don’t know where to start. So you do nothing. You tell yourself it will never work. So it doesn’t. In this episode, I’m giving you two simple but powerful strategies to shift your thoughts, take intentional action and get it done! It’s the same process I use with my clients and it helps you get to a place where your thoughts are no longer holding you back from making progress toward your goals. And if you’ve been struggling with these unhelpful thoughts when it comes to your niche, give yourself the gift of clarity this holiday season. You can start the new year with a niche you love. I’m even giving you 50% off my signature program all through the month of December. Join now.…
There is a wide range of pricing out there for coaching, whether it be one-on-one or group programs. If you’ve been feeling confused and doubting how to price your own offers, this is the episode for you. I’m talking about all things related to pricing your offers and the psychology behind it. We often look at goods, products, or services and think the value is intrinsic. That the price tag is based on something solid and definitive. When really, marketing and pricing are completely based in psychology. We typically think if something is more expensive, then it must be better quality (even if that isn’t really the case). There’s no magic answer when it comes to pricing, but there is an equation you can use to determine the right price for your offer and your ideal clients. In fact, there are three main factors you need to consider when pricing your offer. And you may be surprised to learn that free or low-cost offers can be harder to sell. You also want to be sure that once they buy, your clients will actually follow through on the program so they get the results they want. A lot of this has to do with not only what you’re offering but WHO you’re offering it to. That’s where your niche comes in. The more clear you are on who your ideal client is, the better you’ll be able to anticipate their spending habits and how they perceive value. Here’s an example from my own business: When I set the price for my signature program, Dial Your Niche in 5 Hours, I took all the pieces of the pricing equation into account. It’s not priced based on the amount of TIME it takes to go through the course. Instead, the price is based on the VALUE of the results. What it’s worth to my clients to have a clear niche. Which means they can then go out and find clients for themselves and start making more money. So not only will they have the financial return on that investment of their time and money, they’re also going to feel a lot less stress and more ease when it comes to their coaching business. Listen to the full episode to learn more about the pricing equation and how to apply it to your own offers. And if you haven’t committed to a niche yet, I’d love to have you in Dial Your Niche in 5 Hours. You can join us right here.…
Have you ever wondered what it would look like to take something you absolutely adore and is your passion and turn it into an incredible business? I have one of my besties on the podcast this week, and I’m so excited to introduce you to her! Estelle Winsett is a lawyer by day and a stylist by night. She helps high powered women create personalized signature wardrobes so they feel amazing on the inside and the outside. That way they stand out from the crowd, save time and focus their energy on the things that matter to them. In this episode, we’re talking about her journey to choosing a fabulous niche. In fact, she’s actually one of the reasons I started doing niche coaching. The first time we met in person, on the way to a Mastermind, we stopped into a couple of shops in this tiny little town. This woman literally put together 4 full outfits in about an hour. My jaw dropped. I was amazed, and told her that I (and the world) needed her help. Her response was, “doesn’t everyone know how to do this?” Estelle’s superpower is putting together outfits and shopping, but she didn’t even realize it! This was something that was always there as an interest or a passion. And even though she already has a fantastic career as an attorney, she was able to incorporate this into a successful business. And it’s about so much more than clothes. She helps people to dress in a way that makes them FEEL good. Change the experience of women getting dressed in the morning from stressful and unpleasant to feeling put-together and confident, it sets the tone of the whole day and how they show up. It’s also about saving time. Not everyone likes to shop, and it can be frustrating to walk through store after store and not end up with a put-together look. When it comes to your niche, your clients are happy when you help them save time and avoid pain, discomfort or frustration. Your clients are paying for the result you can give them. Estelle is such a great example of this. Listen to our full conversation now. You’re gonna love it! Oh. My. Goodness. The podcast I planned for this week was all about tuning into your inner wisdom and voice… But that will have to be for another day. It has been one of those weeks where it feels like everything is going wrong. Business, family, tech and car trouble, you name it... Even as I was recording this podcast, my computer completely shut down! You know the feeling… Intense, scattered, out of control. Like there are a ton of plates spinning and they’re all going to start falling. This happens to us all sometimes, doesn’t it? You have a plan of how you think things are going to go. Then, things go sideways. Your brain tells you that something is terribly wrong, it’s not meant to be, you need to shut it all down and hide away. This is totally normal. We wonder why we can’t keep up, why we’re overwhelmed and why we can’t handle it. But we live in a society of distraction, urgency and instant gratification. And when you consider that technology continually inundates us with information, requests, notifications, reminders, etc... It becomes difficult to focus on even the most basic things. In this episode, I’m sharing what I do when I’m feeling like crap and it feels like everything is against me. I’m getting pretty raw this week, because I want you to know that chaos happens to us all. And we can still keep going. I'm sharing 3 steps to find calm when you’re feeling stressed and in the middle of chaos and how you can resist the urge to do all the things. We can look at challenges from a place of humor, curiosity and kindness toward ourselves. More than anything, my friends, I want you to hear… Sometimes, you’re going to have a week where everything goes off the rails. And when that does happen, know that it is normal, know that it is expected, and know that you can handle it. This is all going to be ok. You are a strong person. You are brilliant, even if it feels like you’re not.…
Have you ever been curious about how you can take something that is a passion to you and turn it into a life coaching business where you train other entrepreneurs? On this episode, my good friend and colleague, Kelly Schaefer, is here talking about how she chose her niche and how niche drama impacts her own students. Kelly is the founder of The Concierge Academy, bestselling author of “The Concierge Life” and (you guessed it) a life coach. She helps people who love to take care of others build profitable businesses running errands for other people in their communities. She’s also a perfect example of using clues from your past and turning what comes naturally to you into a profitable (even a million-dollar) business. After 21 years working as a nurse, Kelly left her job and started a local concierge business. She was afraid that all she knew how to do was take care of people, but she found a whole new way to do just that. Our history leaves breadcrumbs leading toward our niche. It turned out that Kelly’s ability and passion for caring for people was still valuable, even outside of the healthcare industry. After building a successful concierge business with several employees, people began seeking her out to ask for help with starting up businesses and finding clients of their own. What started as a little coaching on the side has become The Concierge Academy. For Kelly, life coaching came in as a sort of add-on to the teaching she was already doing. She knew that she was capable of more than what she had already created. She also noticed that her students with better mindsets had more success, followed through on her teaching and made more money. Life coaching and mindset work became a key ingredient to her secret sauce. I wasn’t surprised to hear that one of the biggest challenges Kelly’s students face is choosing a niche. And she knows first-hand how important this step is, because she started out trying to network and market herself to THREE different groups - busy people, moms and seniors. As you can probably guess, this led to exhaustion and burnout. Kelly’s advice? Pick a niche and go all in. You’ll focus your marketing efforts, energy and dollars rather than dividing it into separate buckets. She says her niche has allowed her to have a vibrant YouTube channel, write a book, create courses, coaching programs, starter kits, events, you name it. And she wouldn't have been able to do all those things if she was trying to target 3 different audiences at once. I can’t wait for you to hear this conversation. I couldn’t have scripted it better if I tried! What You’ll Learn: How your natural abilities and passions can translate into a business Why being more specific in your niche actually makes it easier to find clients Why more options isn’t always better Featured in this Episode: Find resources and learn more about The Concierge Academy Check out Kelly’s YouTube channel Read “The Concierge Life” Learn more about Dial Your Niche in 5 Hours…
Have you ever wondered how a coach decides to become a weight loss coach? And how do you stand out from all the other weight loss experts out there? On this episode of the podcast, Molly Zemek is here telling us all about how she chose her niche and developed her own unique style of weight loss coaching. Molly provides tactical advice for food and wine lovers who want to lose weight and stop overeating without counting calories or over-exercising. She’s a former executive chef and sommelier who lost 30 pounds by simply changing her mindset around food and wine. Now, she uses her own transformation and experience as a coaching client to help others get the same results. There are a few things that really stand out about Molly’s story. First, she chose to question the norm. A lot of the weight-loss messaging out there tells people that they’ve got to make food boring. That they need to get to a place where food isn’t interesting or a focus for them anymore. As a self-proclaimed food-lover, this approach wasn’t working for Molly. She was afraid that she loved food too much to be able to lose weight. She thought maybe it could be possible to apply weight loss tools and not give up her love of food. And guess what? She figured out how to do it and created an approach that worked for her. Another part of Molly’s story that really stood out to me was the trust she had in herself and her own intuition. Like all of us, she experienced some doubts about whether people wanted to hear what she had to say. But she decided to trust her instincts and just give it a try. She committed to going all in on her idea for one year. Once she recognized that the story of her transformation could help others, she identified a population based on her past work as a personal chef - male executives. Over time, though, she found that a much broader range of people were attracted to her message. Her population then became food and wine lovers. She narrowed down her population and niche through ACTION. She didn’t wait to have the “perfect” idea and plan. Because the more you practice with your marketing and coaching, the more clarity you get around your niche. There is so much goodness for you in this episode. I can’t wait for you to hear it! Listen now. You’ll Learn: How your intuition can be even more powerful than your doubts Similarities between niche drama, weight loss drama and pretty much all other types of drama out there Molly’s advice for coaches who are searching for their perfect niche Mentioned in this Episode: Learn more about coaching with Molly Listen to the “Weight Loss for Food Lovers” podcast Join Dial Your Niche in 5 Hours…
Have you ever wondered how you can launch once you have a really good niche dialed? Well, in this episode I have a very special guest for you. TaVona Denise is a Launch Strategist for Coaches and a Master Certified Coach through Life Coach School. She helps coaches with successful 1:1 practices to sell, fill and deliver group coaching programs. We’re talking about all things niche, niche drama and launches. TaVona says that figuring out her perfect niche was “a windy road.” She had a few businesses of her own before becoming a Certified Life Coach in 2014. She found herself coaching friends and colleagues on burnout resilience and, ultimately, how to start their own businesses so they could be the ones calling the shots. But she knew there was something else there that she just wasn’t seeing. During a VIP weekend with her coach, TaVona’s perfect niche was revealed! It turns out that TaVona’s perfect niche was something she’d been doing all along. Something that came naturally to her. It was what came easy to her, but it wasn’t obvious. She needed someone else to point it out to her. TaVona says, “It was almost like the skies opened up and harps started playing. This is it! It can house all my interests while still being very specific.” It took one conversation to bring it to the surface. At first, she was riding the excitement and felt so certain of her choice and what to do next... ...then the Niche drama came in. Have you ever wondered how you can turn your personal experiences and trials and tribulations into a coaching business? That is exactly what my guest, Meredith Gardner did. Meredith is known as the Sandwich Generation Coach. In case you aren’t familiar, the sandwich generation refers to people who are taking care of their kids and are also in a caretaker role for their adult parents. She helps these caregivers to stop hating the hard parts of caretaking and increase their capacity to cope with the job in a way that’s beautiful and that really connects them with their loved ones. Our brains like predictability and certainty, and caregiving is anything but. It often brings a dreary outlook and a heaviness that can be hard to shake. But when caregivers can make the shift from obligation and resentment to a place of “I get to do these things, I choose to do these things, I want to do these things,” so much can change. I often talk about how you sometimes need an outside perspective to show you your superpowers. This was so true for Meredith. On a girls’ trip she mentioned (for the first time to anyone) that she was thinking of becoming a life coach. One of the other women in the car immediately suggested that she coach caregivers. She calls it a huge lightbulb moment that took her breath away. ...and so her niche came to life. In this episode, Meredith shares so much about the struggles her clients face, important mindset shifts that have the power to change everything, and her own brain drama around her niche and her offer. Her brain even tried to tell her that caregivers weren’t going to pay for her help...when she herself had paid for a coach to help her through the same thing! Ultimately, Meredith wants her clients (and you) to understand that... We can do the hard parts. You don’t have to love them, but know that you are capable of coping with hard things. It is in those moments when we are open and raw that the real, deep connections and life lessons come through. I hope you enjoy this conversation with Meredith as much as I did.
