S8 E4: The One About Angels
Manage episode 353642641 series 2817992
I'm fascinated with the idea of angels so was so excited to have this chat with Stephen Miller, author of 'The book of Angels: Seen and Unseen.'
What does the word 'angel' actually mean? What actually are angels? Are they all the same? Where did belief in angels come from? What is the best film to watch about them plus much much more!
Stephen mentions quite a few pieces of art so here is a list of them so you don't have to write them down!
William Blake, When the Morning Stars Sang Together, pen & ink and watercolour, ca. 1804-1807, The Morgan Library and Museum, New Yor
Francesco Botticini, Assumption of the Virgin, 1475-76, The National Gallery, London
Carved relief from the Palace of Sargon II, 722-705 BC, featuring a four-winged deity from the Assyrian palace at Khorsabad
Winged Victory of Samothrace, ca. 220-185 BC
Alessandro Botticelli, The Mystical Nativity, ca. 1500-01, The National Gallery, London, photo Lucy Miller
William Blake, Satan Arousing the Rebel Angels, watercolour painted 1808, © Victoria and Albert Museum, London
Alexandre Cabanel, The Fallen Angel, 1847, Musée Fabre, Montpellier
Frans Floris, The Fall of the Rebel Angels (the surviving middle panel), 1554, Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp
