Oh, yes it is! Pantomime is that peculiarly British music hall tradition of family-friendly comedy productions, usually based on a fairy tale or fable, with cross-dressing actors in the lead roles and some element of audience participation.Families around the RG10 area are spoilt for choice this winter, with three different pantomimes to look forward to in January. Local theatre groups in Twyford, Hurst and Wargrave have all been rehearsing hard in order to bring laughter and enjoyment to audiences of all ages in the new year. We bring you the lowdown direct from the (pantomime?) horses' mouths...Twyford & Ruscombe Theatre Group lets down their hair first, performing Rapunzel from Friday 14 to Sunday 16 January. One of the directors, Peter King, tells us what's new (extra matinee!), talks about Covid safety and gives a little reminder about the story. Expect a fairy tale given the traditional pantomime treatment with a comedy duo, a wicked witch, a captive beauty and a handsome prince, and of course cross-dressing, music, singing and dancing.https://twyrusdrama.org.uk/Hurst Pantomime Group follow next, staging A Lad in the Wild West from Thursday 20 to Saturday 22 January. Running the show is a dream team of youth (Hannah Guile, director), and experience (Claire Lawrence, producer), who give some great insights into panto, Hurst style. Expect a rethinking of Aladdin set on a ranch in Texas rather than the Arabian desert, with horses as well as a flying carpet. Hurst productions involve most of the village, from the sound of it!https://www.hurstpanto.org.uk/Last but not least, Wargrave Theatre Workshop transport us to Camelot from Wednesday 26 to Sun 30 January. Director Linda Daman talks about the importance of using each cast member's strengths and outlines the tale of good versus evil, as Arthur and the evil prince face off in the quest for Guinevere's hand in marriage. Expect knights, dragons, wizards and damsels - and, of course, wonderful songs and terrible jokes.https://wargravetheatre.co.uk/For performance times, venue details and ticket sales visit the relevant links above.
