Happy New Year! Have you resolved to be more active in 2022, take up a new hobby, get outside more or make new friends? Here's an idea that offers all of that and more - the sport of walking football.Yes - walking football is a game in its own right, requiring players to adhere to the principles of minimal contact with other players and, obviously, no running. We chat to Cornelius O'Kane, Secretary of Woodley Pensioners Football Club. Despite the name, membership is by no means restricted to retired people in RG5! The club runs three walk-in sessions on different days of the week, at different times of the day, at different locations, both indoor and outdoor. They offer a warm welcome to players of any standard or new to the game - as a guideline, men over 50 and women over 40.Cornelius explains that founder members like himself are generally older, the club having evolved from a medical recovery group set up under Wokingham Borough Council's SHINE programme (activities for the over 60s). Nowadays the club has several league teams offering the opportunity for competitive matches as well as the informal drop-in sessions. Woodley Pensioners FC is a very social group with the emphasis on enjoyment and friendship. The club has been a lifeline for members during the Covid pandemic, helping to keep everyone connected even during the lockdowns.Cornelius explains that the club would love to welcome as many new people as possible this year, both to reduce the average age of the membership and to swell the female ranks.
