Take a break, we’re on Smoko! We're joined by Shayla Aspen, also known as the Tiny Technician, to explore her remarkable journey as a female entrepreneur in the trades. As a gas heating specialist, Shayla's expertise lies in working with gas-powered systems, ranging from fireplaces to tankless water heaters, within the residential sector.
Shayla's path into the trades began when she felt unfulfilled pursuing a business degree, ultimately discovering her passion for plumbing and pipe fitting at Camosun College's Women in Trades program. Transitioning to gas fitting, she became certified to work on gas systems, emphasizing the importance of understanding their fundamentals for household comfort and safety.
Despite facing challenges in a male-dominated industry, Shayla's determination led her to establish her own company, Tiny Technician Ltd. Shayla reflects on her experiences, from her involvement in conventions promoting natural gas to her work with propane systems on remote islands.
As an advocate for women in trades, Shayla discusses the importance of representation, mentorship, and culture within her woman-owned and operated business. She also addresses misconceptions faced by women in trades and strategies for overcoming them, emphasizing the value of self-care and maintaining a healthy work-life balance.
Shayla's story serves as a testament to resilience, resourcefulness, and a passion for making a difference in people's lives through her expertise and dedication in the trades.
