Why am I so passionate about teaching success skills to kids?

In this episode I share my insight from nursing school to motherhood and the rollercoaster ride of my oldest child joining the US Marine Corp. These pivotal moments played significant roles in nurturing my desire to help instill a life-long love of learning in my kids and to teach them how to think, feel and do things for themselves.

Resiliency and self-love are the greatest qualities we can foster in our children. We cannot keep them safe from all the hardships of life – failure, embarrassment, loss, grief, frustration. But, we CAN help them to learn healthy coping skills so when faced with these inevitable challenges, they will not just survive, they will thrive!

In my 5 part workshop series, Lessons 4 Life, I work with small groups of adolescents/teens to foster real world skills, teaching them how to #beyourownbandage. Topics include:

Academic Accountability - "How to be a successful student and engage in your education."

Self Exploration - "Discovery of core values, identification of goals and the benefits of self-care, self-love and positive self-talk."

Skills Lab #1 – Household How-Tos - Walking field trip to the grocery store; how to plan a menu, select produce, pay with cash, count change, prepare food safely, proper use of household appliances, general first aid for cuts & burns, simple mending.

Skills Lab #2 – Garage Basics - Traveling to the gas station for hands on filling of fuel; attendees will also learn how to change a tire, check air pressure, fill windshield wiper fluid, learn about basic tools and general uses.

Skills Lab #3 – Money Matters - Financial terms including budgets, debit vs. credit, student loans, credit scores, taxes and more. Attendees will write a letter to be mailed to them later this year, as well as address an envelope and discuss postage, payment of bills via mail and online.
