The mass looting we saw in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal has no doubt highlighted the problem of poverty in the country. Many commentators have been saying that this would not have happened at that scale if people were employed. Civil society groups have been calling for the Social Relief of Distress and the introduction of a basic income grant. If you may remember that the findings from the UJ/HSRC Covid-19 Democracy Survey showed a public support for such measures.
