According to the World Health Organization at the United Nations, one in ten people fall ill due to contaminated food each year. The highest prevalence of food poisoning takes place in Africa. Closer to home, we have noticed a sharp rise in cases of food poisoning, particularly in the economic and urban centres. Earlier this week, the Department of Health in Gauteng announced that there have been 207 cases of food poisoning since February. Kwa-Zulu Natal and Limpopo have also become provinces of concern in the first half of 2024. In this discussion, we unpack some of the dangers that contaminated food has on public health, enforcing regulations, what awareness campaigns on food safety and how do we ensure that we reduce the number of incidents in our communities.
