In this episode we WadeOutThere with Brian Silvey from Maupin, Oregon. Brian’s childhood playground was the banks of the Sandy River in Oregon, below the high glaciers of Mount Hood that feeds it. He shared time fishing, tying flies, and casting in the summers with his passion for downhill ski racing in the winter.
Brian’s fly tying career began as a way to make some extra money as a kid around the local fly shops. Eventually, Brian’s love of fishing and tying became his life long profession. He has been guiding on the Deschutes and Sandy Rivers for over thirty eight years, is a signature fly tyer for Umpqua Feather Merchants, and is a certified fly fishing casting instructor.
We discuss some of the changes in gear over the years that have influenced his fly fishing and tying, trout fishing on the Deschutes, and Brian’s deliberate methodology for reading water.
