Welcome to Episode 15 of The Write Start. I’m Lisa Iannucci, and The Write Start podcast is all about becoming a successful full-time freelance writer. I’ve had a very long career where I’ve written for many national magazines and I've written more than 20 books. It’s my career, not my hobby and, on this podcast, you’ll learn from me, and my amazing guests, everything you need to know about writing for different genres, finding ideas, finding work, pitching editors, and more, but most importantly, you’ll learn about making money. Let’s get started!
My courses are coming soon!
A shout out to a new podcast -- Misshelved. Now I have to say this is not an advertisement and I’m not being paid to tell you about it. That’s because I wouldn’t take a penny from my daughter -- it’s her podcast. She doesn’t even know I’m saying this, but I have to tell you that if you’re a writer or if you love books, you need to check out Misshelved, a new bi-weekly podcast series from award-winning bookseller Nicole Brinkley. In each episode, you’ll meet an independent bookseller and listen in as they talk to one of their favorite authors about books, publishing, and the world we live in. You can find Misshelved on several platforms, including Spotify. Please check it out.
So for this week’s interview, I talk to author Barbara Clarke’s about her new memoir The Red Kitchen. I wanted to dive into the writing of a memoir because I talk to so many writers who want to start their careers by writing their memoir but really don’t have an idea of how to go about it and since this is Clarke’s second memoir, I thought she would have some good insight on the process. I was right. Clarke’s book chronicles the long-term effects of an early childhood trauma and how that alters a life's course, but it’s written in a way that’s deep and funny all at the same time “The Red Kitchen” (April 6, 2021, She Writes Press)/ Enjoy the interview -- oh and sorry about the noise in this one I’m working on it again but you can still hear it!
