This year we got to follow from up the very first GLOBE WCT FIJI--voted best surf contest on the planet by the ASP surfers--with another event blessed with filthy surf and standout performances. Dubbed the sickest event on the planet, the contest went down between May 21st and June 1st, 2006, with Damien Hobgood taking the top honors. We approached this year's event with two goals: 1. Make sure we don't mess up a good thing; and 2. Put a Globe stamp of fun on it. To this end, we spent a great deal of energy setting up the proper dynamics for all the non-surfing elements around this event, knowing the surfing was going to be sick anyway. We brought together a diverse group of commentators, with Americans Jamie Brisick, Steve Zeldin and Chris Cote mixing it up with the Aussies, Sean Doherty, Ronnie Blakey, Nathan Webster and Derek Reilly. Perhaps the most important change we made this year was the introduction of the first annual Tavamotu Challenge (the Quest for Cote's Bar Tab)--n inter-island challenge between the surfers on Tavarua (traditionally, the Americans and Hawaiians) vs. the surfers on Namotu (the Aussies). In the contest anything goes, where the contestants are judged on anything from fishing, tennis, golfing and surfing to drinking, streaking, poor sportsmanship and fool play. Coach Cote judged the whole thing and it is anything but your usual surf contest dribble.
