Cassius Clay and “Black September” leave their marks on the Olympics on this episode of This Day In History!
On this episode of This Day In History, Tony and Armand tell us about memorable events that transpired at the 1960 and 1972 Olympic Games.
In 1960, Cassius Clay (Muhammad Ali) wins the gold medal in light heavyweight boxing by defeating three-time European champion, Zbigniew Pietrzykowski. Also, the Munich massacre mars the 1972 Olympic Games as a Palestinian terrorist group (Black September) takes 11 Israeli athletes hostage. During the attack, two of the hostages were killed, and the remaining nine are executed the following day.
Plus, Lynette Fromme attempts to assassinate President Gerald Ford in 1975, and Queen lead singer Freddie Mercury (Farrokh Bulsara) is born on this day in 1946.
