I believe that one of the ingredients of a thriving life is having a resilient mind. Many people, for many different reasons, lack that important ingredient and as a result end up loosing it all... their mind, their relationships, their home, you name it.

While attending the Global Summit on Mental Health Culture Change, I got to meet Dr. Jonathan Sherin, the director of Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health and thought it would be great to have a conversation with him regarding this and gain his perspective on mental health and living a thriving life.

In his current role, Dr. Sherin leads the largest public mental health system in the country, serving over 250,000 clients annually in the most populous and one of the most ethnically diverse counties in the nation. Los Angeles County is the most populous county in the United States and its population is larger than that of 40 individual U.S. states.

Dr. Sherin is a psychiatrist and neurobiologist by trade. He completed his undergraduate studies in neuroscience at Brown University, his graduate work at the University of Chicago and Harvard, and his postgraduate training at UCLA.

Dr. Sherin is a leading authority on the care of veterans struggling with trauma and reintegration challenges. He has testified in Congress on veteran homelessness and suicide.

More recently, his efforts have focused on developing access programs to dismantle myriad of barriers facing vulnerable populations as well as methods for measuring wellbeing (and human flourishing) as an outcome.
