Redefinition is the action or process of re-looking at something and making a change. As educators is it time to redefine some of the ways we see the world around us and in turn redefine the ways we develop professional creativity? Andrew has worked in education since completing his BA in Primary Education in 2004. He has been within leadership roles, holding a range of TLRs and Senior Leadership posts; including being a Headteacher in a 1 form entry Primary School that had a Resourced Provision for pupils with Speech, Language & Communication Difficulties. Inclusion has always been something Andrew is passionate about and as a teacher, tailoring personalised provision for pupils and ensuring that families felt valued as part of the community was always at the forefront of his practice. He is a strong advocate for putting Social Emotional Learning at the very heart of a schools approach. In addition, Andrew has always sought to redefine the ways in which himself and the people he works with develop their practice and it is this that led him into becoming extensively involved in school to school support. Andrew finished his headship to launch his own educational company ;Redefining Education Ltd; which aims to support schools, trusts, teachers and leaders to Reflect, Rethink and Transform. Dr Lucy Kelly is an Associate Professor in Education at the University of Bristol, primarily working with PGCE English trainee teachers. She advocates that trainee teachers see themselves as their own biggest resource in the classroom, and that they prioritise their wellbeing from the outset. Her main research interest is reflective practice as a positive tool for educator wellbeing, and she is Project Lead for the 'Reimagining the Diary' project, which uses a multimodal Diary Toolkit and ongoing wellbeing CPD to support educators across the country. The team are now in the process of commercialising the Diary Toolkit (launching in the autumn), but they are also using it with students, working with schools nationally and internationally. Lucy has written numerous articles on educator wellbeing and reflective practice and presented her work on podcasts, at conferences and on the radio. They discuss these new bitesize CPD opportunities that offer a flexible and accessible pathway to higher education. Now in Higher Education as the programme lead for the Short Courses, Mâir previously spent 16 years as a teacher and is a currently vice-chair of governors at an alternative provision, a school for children with social, emotional and mental health needs (SEMH). In this episode, Toria chats to Sarah Hepworth about developing curious learners in creative ways. As an experienced English Leader of over 10 years, Sarah feels passionately about developing learners who are given the opportunity to develop their imagination, ask questions and be curious. Sarah uses her knowledge of the EEF through her role with Derby Research School to also talk about the ShREC model, which is part of the EYFS guidance to effective adult and pupil interaction. By being creative with how we develop those small and natural moments of curiosity, we can engage in conversations with our pupils and, importantly, spark, watch, listen and inspire. Who doesn’t love a good question? Time is precious in the classroom but we can creatively use a picture, role play, a cube, a suitcase, anything to hook our learners in and, with a culture where curiosity is allowed to flourish, enable learners to grow, be independent and be curious. Our discipline becomes consequence-based instead of teaching-based. 2.We think that if we are disciplining we can't be warm and nurturing. 3.We confuse consistency with rigidity. 4. We talk too much. 5.We focus too much on the behaviour and not enough on the why behind the behaviour. 6. We forget to focus on how we say what we say. 7.We communicate that our kids shouldn't experience big or negative feelings. 8. We overreact, so our kids focus on our overreaction, not their own actions. 9. We don't repair. 10. We lay down the law in an emotional, reactive moment, then realize we've over reacted. 11. We forget that our children may sometimes need our help making good choices or calming themselves down. 12.We consider an audience when disciplining. 13. We get trapped in power struggles. 14. We discipline in response to our habits and feelings instead of responding to our individual child in that particular moment. 15.We embarrass our kids by correcting them in front of others. 16.We assume the worst before letting our kids explain. 17.We dismiss our kid's experience. 18. We expect too much. 19. We let 'experts' trump our own instincts. 20. We're too hard on ourselves. In this episode, Toria chats to Sarah about how applying cognitive techniques will increase mental agility and emotional intelligence and F.L.I.P thinking. This can be used for you and with others, including the young people you work with. Sarah was a headteacher and now runs her own successful consultancy business and is an advisor and facilitator for Laughology. When Sarah chose to leave school at 16, she was told by 3 separate teachers that ‘she wouldn’t amount to much’. That didn’t put her off though! Since then she has had a varied career, working with banks, businesses, retail, educational and sporting organisations, supporting their learning and development needs before becoming a head teacher. In her first two years of headship, she successfully managed a £7m rebuild; an expansion programme to double the number of pupils and a culture-change programme. All of these projects ensured her school went from a satisfactory Ofsted ranking to a good. During this time she managed key stakeholders, including local authorities, school inspectors and governors, she also successfully guided her team through an improvement programme.
