This week we're looking back at one of our favorite episodes with Laila Johnson-Salami, host of The Morning Show on AriseTV and a rising star in African news and journalism. Since this conversation Laila went on to become a founding member of Feminist Coalition aka FemCo in Nigeria. In just a few months FemCo went on to international acclaim, leading a generation of young Nigerians during the #EndSARS protests and spearheading a global campaign in the diaspora. Laila's passion and belief in the power of African women has been clear from the beginning. We revisit one of our most popular discussions to date, and support the movement led by Laila and her colleagues.
We look at how the media and news narrative shapes travel, and how we see ourselves. She lets us in on her life and what its like delivering news in Africa (01:00), how the news media shapes the narrative of the continent (09:40), why misinformation is so prevalent and what we can do to fight it (21:05), her passion for women's issues in Nigeria (32:40), plus why she feels like there is so must mistrust for the media and the news (42:35).
