Jessie Ed Davis, III, was born on September 21st, 19 44, in Norman, Oklahoma,a blend of Comanche, Seminole, Muscogee and Kiowa. He played in Conway Twitty’s band and became friends with fellow Oklahoman Leon Russell, Jesse appeared on albums by Eric Clapton, Rod Stewart, Keith Moon, Steve Miller, Guthrie Thomas, Harry Nilsson, Ry Cooder, Willie Nelson, Neil Diamond, Rick Danko, Van Dyke Parks and joined Taj Mahal, playing guitar and pianoTaj's first four albums. In 1975, he toured with the Faces as second guitarist and in 1985 he formed the Graffiti Band melding music and Native American poetry; the result was the album which Bob Dylan called the best album of the year. Jesse died on June 22, 1988, and was inducted into the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame and the Native American Music Hall of Fame. William Szymczyk was born in Muskegon, Michigan on February 13, 1943. Szymczyk’s future career as a producer had its origin in the U.S. Navy where he took a course in radio and TV production. When a staff producer position opened up at ABC Records, he took it and after hearing B. B. King, Bill decided he had to produce an album by the blues master. After a shaky start in California, due to a Los Angeles earthquake, he decided to move to Colorado and start a label with Larry Ray. During this time he began working with Joe Walsh, J. Geils, and other bands. Eventually, Bill went on to produce albums by Jay Ferguson of Spirit and Joe Joe Gun, The Eagles, Edgar Winter, Wishbone Ash, Elvin Bishop, Santana, and others. Bill officially retired in 1990, though he re-emerged in the mid 2,000s to work on a limited amount of albums and has over 675 records on his discography. That's Waddy Wachtel! Robert "Waddy" Wachtel was born on May 24, 1947in Queens, New York and he got his nickname as a teenager. He began playing guitar as a teen and played in bands around New York City. In 1970, he moved to L.A. to work in the record industry, and got his start working with the Cowsills and later as a backing guitar for the Everly Brothers. Some of the greats Waddy worked with include Warren Zevon, Linda Ronstadt, Randy Newman, James Taylor, Fleetwood Mac, Keith Richards, Bob Dylan, Iggy Pop, among others), turning the guitar virtuoso into a household name – a rare feat for a sideman, not there for the spot light, but there for the "zip." It started out to be a Trick's Countdown (5...4...3...2...1) and ended up being " A Cosmic Partnership , The Red Rhodes AudioBiograpy! " a 90 minute tribute to the number one pedal steel sideman in popular music. Orville Jay, Red, Rhodes was one of the most versatile steel guitarists in country music. Born in East Alston, Illinois, in 1930, his mother taught him to play the dobro when he was only five years old. At 15, Orville switched to the pedal steel guitar, using a homemade stand. He played his first professional gig with his stepfather and in 1960 he moved to Los Angeles to do session work. By the late 19 60's he was one of the most in-demand session men on the West Coast. One of his most unusual projects was The Ventures in Space where he used the pedal steel to produce the other worldly effects for the group. Rhodes played pedal steel on many country rock, pop, and rock albums of artists such as Spanky and Our Gang, James Taylor, The Beach Boys, Seals and Crofts, The Byrds, The Carpenters, and many others, as part of the Wrecking Crew studio musicians in the 1960s and 70s. As part of his studio work, Red played on several of the Monkee's songs. During this time he developed a close relationship with Michael Nesmith and when Mike went solo, Red Roads went along with him and became an integral part of Nesmith's solo records. Red Rhodes also issued a series of albums under his own name and his own band. He also appeared on several other artists albums due to his reputation as the steel guitar wizard he was. In the late 1970s, Rhodes shifted his focus from performing to guitar electronics at his Royal Amplifier Service shop in Hollywood, California. There, Rhodes modified amplifiers and created his custom Velvet Hammer guitar pickups for James Burton, Clarence White, and other guitarists. Rheumatoid arthritis restricted Rhodes' public performances and recordings in the 1980s and 1990s, with the notable exception of his appearance on Michael Nesmith's Tropical Campfires album and tour in 1992. Rhodes fell ill soon after this tour, and died on August 20, 1995, from interstitial lung fibrosis. You've heard him numerous times through the '60s and '70's although his name isn't commonly known. After the countdown you'll certainly remember John Barbata. He was born on Easter Sunday, April 1, was an American drummer who played in bands in The Turtles, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Jefferson Airplane and Jefferson Starship In 1978, John was involved in an automobile accident that forced him to resign as the Jefferson Starship drummer. During his career he is said to have played on over 60 albums. After his daughter Leah was born, he and his wife Angela, relocated to her hometown of Ada, Oklahoma, where they lived until he died on May 8, 2024 after 34 years of marriage. He is quoted as saying, "I was very fortunate, most drummers only go around once.
