The Toronto Comic Arts Festival (TCAF) exists to promote the breadth and diversity of comics and what is considered comics as a legitimate medium of literary and artistic worth. TCAF seeks to promote the creators of these works in their broad and diverse voices for the betterment of the medium of comics and to reach as broad an audience as possible for them. TCAF was held from May 11 to 12 at the Toronto Reference Library.

Cecil Castellucci is the award winning and New York Times Bestselling author of books and graphic novels for young adults including Shade, The Changing Girl, Boy Proof, The Plain Janes, Soupy Leaves Home, The Year of the Beasts, Tin Star, Female Furies and Odd Duck. Cecil has also written Batgirl for DC Comics with short stories and short comics published in Strange Horizons, Tor.com, and many other anthologies plus Shifting Earth the graphic novel published by Berger Books. Cecil’s most current effort is I Am The Comic Book.

I Am the Comic Book is a performance promenade comics surrealist story game comics conceptual art piece, instigated by Cecil and supported by an array of incredible artists. They participate in an ‘exquisite corpse game’ where Cecil gives a prompt and the artist creates a three-panel sequence that is made into a temporary tattoo and worn on Cecil’s arm. After the tattoo fades, it’s on to the next ‘chapter’ where Cecil is the book, walking in the world, as the character Maxi walks in their world.
