The Toronto Comic Arts Festival (TCAF) exists to promote the breadth and diversity of comics and what is considered comics as a legitimate medium of literary and artistic worth. TCAF seeks to promote the creators of these works in their broad and diverse voices for the betterment of the medium of comics and to reach as broad an audience as possible for them. TCAF is held from May 11 to 12 at the Toronto Reference Library.

Shannon Spence is a cartoonist, printmaker and medical technologist living in Jersey City, NJ but is originally from Hampton, VA. She has made comics for 24-hour comics day on memoir and nostalgia, and created stories like The Hunt Begins (a medieval fantasy in pencil) and her current book, P*NK LAB GRL! (a punk sci-fi lite comedy in ink published in risograph). She founded the Comix Accountability Club in March 2022, an inclusive online community for cartoonists that publishes an annual anthology.

Punk Lab Girl, described as a medical espionage/sci-fi lite/comedy, is a two part comic book with the second part available now. The story goes like this: “In a future where clusters of new and freakish diseases are common, punk girl Shelly applies for a job to fund her band’s upcoming show. She is quickly hired as a medical technologist in a lab that tests for these ever-changing diseases. However, ‘Care 4 U Labs’ isn’t as caring as it claims. The coworkers are shady, the procedures are nonsense, and the boss is clearly in it for the money. It’s up to Shelly and her bandmate Rufio to expose the lies and put on a show to remember.”
