Although you may not have a statue of Buddha in your home, we all struggle with idolatry. In this message, Pastor Jamie Nunnally explains why idolatry is such a big deal and what we can do about it.
Here are some idols that you might have:
Food
Sex
Entertainment
Hobbies
Leisure
Success
Money
Possessions
Romance
Family
Yourself
These can be gifts in our lives. But,
good gifts make bad gods.
What is an idol? Exodus 20:3-5
1. Anything or anyone we allow to take the place of God in our lives.
God is not supposed to be your favorite, but your one and only.
2. Anything or anyone we worship.
3. Anything or anyone that you serve.
We have a tendency to worship idols.
Joshua 24:15
Why is idolatry such a big deal?
1. Idols hurt us. 1 Corinthians 10:6-14
2. Who or what you worship determines what kind of person you’ll be. Psalm 106:19-20
3. Idolatry isn’t just a sin, it’s the root of all sin. Mark 12:29-31 “Jesus replied, “The most important commandment is this: ‘Listen, O Israel! The Lord our God is the one and only Lord. 30 And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.’ 31 The second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ No other commandment is greater than these.”
How to get rid of an idol: recognize, repent & replace.
1. Recognize.
What do you make financial sacrifices for? What worries you? What makes you happiest? What do you spend your time on? Where is your refuge? Exodus 32:20
2. Repent. Exodus 33:4
3. Replace. Exodus 34:1
Are you recognizing, repenting of and replacing your idols?
