Episode 5

A mysterious murder of top industrialists leads Steed and Mrs. Peel to their first encounter with a science-fiction menace: The Cybernauts.

[three_fourth] Originally aired in Britain October 16, 1965 (season 4, episode 3), this episode was directed by Sidney Hayers, written by Philip Levene, and stars Patrick Macnee and Diana Rigg, with Michael Gough, Frederick Jaeger, and Bernard Horsfall.

This is the first foray into science fiction for the British TV show. At the time, the word “cybernaut” would have had little recognition for the audience, so it would have been truly mysterious. However, as with Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde, this way of portraying the concept doesn’t age well. Once you know what a cybernaut is, the mystery vanishes.

Season 4 of The Avengers is availalbe on Amazon.
