With the paint still wet and the drinks fridge still chilling the new Media Village training room opened for business last week. Chris and Pat from MV had decided to expand their already strong commitment to training by creating a dedicated training space. Equipped with a Mac Pro/Resolve control surface for the trainer, and 17” MacBook Pros driven by Tangent Wave’s for the students. We also had a projector showing the GUI and a 40” Plasma showing the main output. The room has a kitchen area, bar fridge and a chill out sofa area.

I loved the larger training room. Even with 7 students I had lots of room to walk around comfortably moving between the workstations. The Resolve panels were set up on the side of the room so I had a perfect eyeline to the students or the projector. I liked to be able to see each person so I can judge if they fully understand the module I am teaching. I always encouraged the students to speak out if they didn’t understand something, because if they didn’t get it chances are one of the other students didn’t fully understand the topic I was teaching either.

In Singapore both the R101 and the Colorist Strategies classes had a great mixture of students from a number of different backgrounds, editors, colorists, and VFX artists. Students always bring different experiences to the class, so we always spend some time discussing our previous exploits into color grading. We took these chats out on the town one night, to a great new bar called LeVel 33. Great views of the Grand Prix track and of the new Sands casino, might have to stay there next time!

To sum up, the new room has taken Media Village’s training commitment to a new level, I loved the larger space and found the projector, very useful for both me and the students.

My next Singapore classes are in May, but the MV training room has classes set for Smoke, Nuke and Color Science during the next few months.
