As most of you know, Ami suffered two broken wrists a few weeks ago in an attempt to soften our daughter Alexis' fall during a family bike ride. The physical pain was bad enough, but add the emotional pain that she is going through on top of it and it is almost unbearable. She can't cook, clean, or even dress herself. But she understands that this isn't forever... so how is she handling things? Listen to Justin and Ami McClure discuss this and much more in this week's episode of "We Love Our Kids, But..."! Some things in life are inevitable. Change, disagreements, failure, mistakes... but also happiness, making memories, success and more. Death is also inevitable. For centuries, people have wondered and speculated what comes after death but the fact is that nobody knows (and we most likely won't know until it happens). About two weeks ago, we lost a friend to the family to cancer. She was joyful, full of energy, loving, and kind but most of all she was taken away from this Earth far too soon... Justin and Ami sit down this week to talk about if it's possible to prepare children for death. How does death affect a child when they personally know them? At what age do they actually understand passing away? Is it even possible to prepare a child for something like this? Find out in this week's episode of "We Love Our Kids, But.."! The mind of a 3-year old isn't the same as a fully grown adult's mind. Because of this, sometimes as adults we will attempt to think as a 3-year old in terms of what they are feeling or the way they perceive them. "Do my kids think I'm a bad dad because I overreacted in a situation?" or "are my kids actually happy?" are questions every mom or dad might ask themselves while parenting. In this week's episode, Justin and Ami sit down to discuss the ways they think their kids perceive them. From situation to situation, and from kid to kid, perception changes. Parents want only the best for their kids but each kid will see what "the best for them is" differently than the next. All parents can do is what they think is right in each situation and see how it plays out. America's heroes have changed over the years based on historical events and what technology they had at that time. During World War I, many received news through newspapers or radios and their heroes most likely were the soldiers fighting for our country. In 2021, we have televisions, cell phones, and laptops, so our children's heroes can come from anywhere! Movies, Tik Tok, politics, the list could continue forever. Justin and Ami discuss how the view of local and famous heroes has been shaped by technology and who they hope their children's heroes will be. Who are your heroes? Do you think your heroes will change as time goes on? Be sure to engage with us on Instagram and YouTube so we can hear your thoughts! Americans own an estimated 393 million guns, making up 40% of the world's guns owned by civilians. When you pair that with the record high gun-related death toll that last year brought, I think we can all agree there is a correlated problem. Innocent people die everyday in relation to gun violence. It is heartbreaking to know that these deaths could be preventable with the correct action's by our leaders. In this week's episode, Justin and Ami dive head first into the discussion of gun control, what it's like to raise children in today's society, and recall a time that they were held at gunpoint. As many of you know, Justin and Ami are an interracial couple with biracial children. Discussing race in this week's episode goes far beyond the podcast as this is something that affects the family personally. This time last year, people were flooding the streets in protest against racism and police brutality. What's left is memorials for people like George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and the countless others who's lives were taken from them far too soon. "Spoiling a child" could mean a number of things. It could mean that a parent gives their child everything they want but it could also mean that they spend too much time or energy with their kid. Another thing to look at is who is spoiling the next generation? With the accessibility to technology, spoiling a kid doesn't always come from their parents. It could come from YouTube, video games, or their tablets. In this week's episode, Justin and Ami discuss why they think their children are spoiled and if that is even a bad thing.
