In this part of the world, there are the beginnings of snow on the peaks, mornings are chilly and a general air of excitement is growing as we start to feel winter just around the corner. And this means we’re getting close to avalanche season.
So how do you prepare both practically and mentally to step from summer backcountry adventures, to winter ones?
This episode is intended as a general chat about getting back in the headspace of avalanche season. We will dive into more specifics in later episodes. We also want to disclaimer this with: we are not ACMG guides, avalanche professionals or educators. We are simply recreationalists with a passion for systems, intentionality, and being prepared.
Covered in this episode:
How to store your avalanche gear at the end of each season to get the most out of your (expensive!) gear.
Gear checks to ensure everything is in good working order for the season ahead.
Getting in the headspace of making decisions in avalanche terrain: heuristics, checklists and group discussions
Watching the weather over the season to paint your mental picture of the snowpack
