Content warning: sexual assault, physical violence, brutality, and murder.
Karie Kroll is a nurse of over 30 years, a family woman, and a co-victim of murder from Iowa. She found her passion for nursing at a young age and pursued a degree in the medical field out of college. However, it was not long into her professional trajectory that her family experienced a devastating loss: the horrific 1996 murder of her sister, Amanda. In this episode, Karie describes all that came next for her family while navigating the criminal justice system throughout the last 30 years, and the drastic changes they experienced just last year. The Broken Cycle Media team is incredibly grateful for Karie's candidness, advocacy, and her willingness to share her sister's memory with our audience. This episode is in loving memory of Amanda Michelle Folker.

Content warning: sexual abuse and child sexual abuse. It has been a great honor to host Mike Sacks and Kelly Gee on What Came Next prior to this conversation. Kelly first shared his experiences of abuse in episodes 51 and 52, entitled “Against Big Odds” and “What Happens Next,” which aired in January of 2024. Episodes 109 and 110, entitled “Silence is an Incubator” and “Up to Us to Protect,” were released over a year later and highlight Mike’s abuse experiences with the same hockey coach nearly a decade prior to Kelly's abuse. The two men, united by sharing their experiences in the media and a similar mission to change the world, created a non-profit organization called Survivors for Change. In this special episode of What Came Next, both men join us again to share about their process of developing a revolutionary program for survivors and their support systems in the wake of their healing. The Broken Cycle Media team extends our immense gratitude to the Survivors for Change team; it’s survivors and organizations like them that will enable the vicious cycle to end. Content warning: child sexual abuse material, child sexual assault, sexual assault, nonconsensual pornography, sexual violence, sexual paraphilia, and pedophilia. Kim is a mother and nurse from Indiana. She reached out to the Broken Cycle Media team in hopes of sharing her story for the first time to bring awareness to a trajectory she never thought she would have had to traverse. Nearly a decade into her marriage, her whole life changed with a home raid by the FBI and several other criminal justice forces. The organizations would consequently find a large catalogue of child sexual abuse material in her then-husband’s possession. However, at the start, Kim was not aware of all facets of his crimes. It would eventually take her years to learn everything, as well as to receive what closure the legal system offered. We are so grateful that Kim was willing to highlight all that continues to come next for her and her children, and that she is sharing her immense fortitude and strength with our audience today. Content warning: assault, sexual assault, rape, serial rape, and nonconsensual pornography. As shared in part one of her story, Hannah Vanderhorst is a special education teacher and administrator living in Denver, Colorado. Having moved to the city in 2016, just before going through a breakup, Hannah turned to dating apps to expand her social circle and look for potential love. However, an October 2019 date changed her trajectory forever. It was on this date that she became a victim of a serial sexual predator, although she wouldn’t find that out until over three years after her assault. Hannah would then join a taxing legal battle to receive justice, witness legal change elicited by her and others’ experiences, and work to heal from the trauma. The Broken Cycle Media team is grateful that Hannah was willing to so selflessly share her story to bring awareness to our listeners. Sources: Allyn, B. (2024, February 15). Content warning: pedophilia, sexual sadism, paraphilia, psychopathy, brutality, child sexual abuse material, rape, sexual assault, torture, and murder. Joan Hoyt is a business professional and family woman from Santa Cruz, California. Although she has proudly served her county as a juror before, a 2024 jury duty assignment opened her eyes to the harsh realities of a criminal justice process she would have never thought was real prior. Her assignment included listening to the heartbreaking facts of Madyson Middleton’s gruesome 2015 murder, then deeming whether Madyson’s murderer should be released from juvenile incarceration in February of 2025, only ten years later. And when the jurors learned this process will occur every two years in perpetuity because of laws placed in effect after Madyson’s murder, Joan and her fellow jurors began using all they witnessed as fuel towards making legal change. The Broken Cycle Media team is so deeply grateful Joan was willing to share her unique perspective with us today, and that she continues to fight for justice for Madyson and so many others. This episode is dedicated in loving memory of Madyson Middleton. Sources: California Supreme Court Upholds Law Protecting 14–15-Year-Olds from Transfer to Adult Court . (2022, July 27). As shared in part one of her story, Kiersten Hathcock is a multi-crime survivor, self-taught carpenter, entrepreneur, author, volunteer intuitive medium, and co-founder of the non-profit organization, The National Institute of Law and Justice. Although she was born and raised in Ohio, her journey has taken her to many places and through many professional phases. It wasn’t until turning 36 that her trajectory became much more spiritually-based, and she realized she had become re-attuned to an ability she had first experienced as a child. In the process, she would also recover memories of her own childhood sexual abuse. In uncovering her past, as well as many other victims’ untold narratives, she has become an advocate for the voiceless within her work. Since starting her volunteer role as a medium in cold case murders and other related crimes, she has helped bring justice and/or solace to families across the country. Content warning: domestic violence, intimate partner violence, narcissistic abuse, cultic abuse, cults, and sexual abuse. Liz Iacuzzi is an athlete, writer, performer, and personality who focuses on exploring uncomfortable subject matter through comedy. However, it wasn’t until extricating herself from an acting class-turned-cult that she would eventually discover her next passion: educating the masses about cultic abuse. She does so on her podcast, Was I in a Cult? on which she helps other cult survivors share their stories for awareness. We are so grateful Liz was willing to share her journey with us today, especially because it is one of the first times she’s publicly divulged it at-length. Was I in a Cult?
