WYOPO 001: Eric Hollingsworth - How To Win In Elite Sports

After much time conceptualising, this podcast project has finally come to fruition.

For my first episode of “Win Your Own Personal Olympics”, I am paying homage to the Rio Olympic Games and who better to have as my first guest, than Eric Hollingsworth.

I have known Eric for the past ten years in varying capacities. He is a mentor, he is a friend and he coached me in the realm of elite track and field. In this podcast, you’ll hear about Eric Hollingsworth’s impressive athletic resume (3:25), as we talk about elite sports, and the journey athletes take to win.

This 50-minute podcast is about to expose you to the cut-throat territory of high-performance athleticism and how you can apply these lessons to real life.

So sit tight as I take you on a journey with someone that knows what it takes to win in elite sports.

In this podcast episode with Eric Hollingsworth, you will learn:

  • Eric’s background growing up in London and how he entered the sporting world (5:00).
  • How Eric transitioned from the team sport of soccer to the individual sport of track & field (11:53).
  • How meeting Daley Thompson (Olympic Champion in Decatholon 1980 & 1984) and Mike Corden (elite coach) jumpstarted his dedication to high-performance track and field. (13:20).
  • Eric’s transition from amateur to professional athlete (17:20); and later from athlete to coach (23:40).
  • The science of sports and understanding the field objectively in a technical and statistical perspective (28:58).
  • The principle of reverse engineering in track and field and how it helped athletes (including me) to understand what it takes to win, and how to achieve the delicate balance of keeping people’s dreams alive while keeping in touch with their abilities in reality (33:15).
  • How Eric applied the systems he originally developed for track and field soccer and basketball. (37:48).
  • Why sports science and sports medicine have been such big players in terms of performance (43:30).

Eric also shared anecdotes about his life to be learnt from, if not, laughed about.

  • Training with Daley Thompson instilled in him the dedication, focus and professionalism that you must practice to be able to win (14:40).
  • Daley Thompson and Carl Lewis’ ‘rivalry’ (18:15).
  • How Eric ended up in Australia (clue: the weather played a major part) (19:20).
  • How unfortunate athletic injuries can lead to awesome opportunities (24:55).
  • The juggle of having multiple ‘jobs’ and making ends meet (26:25).
  • The details of the nickname “Vialli” and an infamous game where he had to ‘rub it in’ (27:15).
  • And a bonus narrative on how Eric saw me when I started training with him.
