Melanie Amaro kicked the show off with a dance remix of Adele's "Someone Like You." Simon Cowell remarked that it "wasn't karaoke, you've taken the track and done something different with it." He said she had confidence and sounds like a diva. Her second song was Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston's "When You Believe." Nicole Scherzinger said it gave her goosebumps and she "believed every word" that Melanie sang.
Rachel Crow started with B.o.B's "Nothin' on You." Paula Abdul called it her "best performance," a "perfect song -- fun, youthful and you're a star." After her second song, Michael Jackson's "Music and Me," Nicole called Rachel "an old soul in a 13-year old's body" and Simon agreed.
Trying to bounce back from his second week in the bottom two, Marcus Canty did Chaka Khan's "Ain't Nobody," which Nicole said "took us to church and the dance club at the same time." Simon said he "likes people who don't act like victims and blame other people -- you really came back strong." But Cowell found Canty's second performance -- Leon Russell's "A Song for You" -- "a bit boring" and said he'd heard similar versions of the song on other shows.
Josh Krajcik's version of Rihanna's "We Found Love" had the judges split, with the men both finding the song choice inappropriate and the ladies both saying it showed that he can sing anything well. Although the guys both liked his take on the Joe Cocker arrangement of George Harrison's "Something," better, L.A. Reid called it "ever so slightly karaoke" and Cowell advised him to "not allow any more of the crazy choreography around you."
Chris Rene added his own lyrics to the verses of T.I. and Rihanna's "Live Your Life." Simon was impressed with his charisma and presence more than by his voice, while L.A. Reid said he "keeps improving each week." Accompanying himself on guitar, Rene returned with an original song with a hook of "where do we go from here?" Nicole said, "Sky's the limit with you, baby." Simon said that at this stage of the show "doing an original song was either stupidity or a stroke or genius" and concluded that in this case, it was the latter.
