GLOSSARY OF TERMS (as we understood them at the time of recording)

  • ANDROGYNY - We understand androgyny to be a blanket term for gender presentation that does not definitively fall into "masculine" or "feminine" presentation. Rather, androgyny sits somewhere in between, or else elides gendered categorization altogether. As such, androgyny encompasses a huge swath of identities, and is not remotely synonymous with "non-binary." Cis people can present androgynously, and non-binary people can present very masc or femme. FYI, the hosts of this show both greatly value their own androgyny.
  • NON-BINARY - We adhere to a principle of self-identity on this show. I.e. people are non-binary if they choose to identify as such, and there are no other intrinsic requirements. In general, non-binary can be defined as an identity that exists in opposition to being categorized by a binary gender. It can overlap with trans, agender, genderfluid, and other queer identities, but doesn't have to. It can spur a desire to use they/them or neopronouns, but doesn't have to! Like most things to do with identity, it's a very individualized term.
  • QUEER - A reclaimed slur that has been largely embraced by a wide spectrum of non-heteronormative folks (us included!) and is used here interchangeably to talk about our genders and our sexualities.
  • TRANS - Another term with myriad applications! Basically, we use "trans" to refer generally to the community of people who wish to identify as something other than their assigned-at-birth gender.
