Success is never achieved alone. In this special episode, learn where to find mentors, the secrets to crafting impactful outreach emails, and how to cultivate a healthy relationship with them. Even today’s most influential business leaders like Sheryl Sandberg has credited her early career success to her mentor. We’ll also analyze a recent Harvard Business Review article sharing that the best mentors think like Michelangelo. HBR added that these mentors supported their mentees through two types of affirmations: perceptual and behavioral. At the end, I will reveal this week’s #BeInfinity challenge with you.

Why Mentorship Is Important

  • It’s the #1 most asked questions that I get on LinkedIn and email inbox!
  • Great mentors open doors for you, internally, promotions and projects, externally, connections and investments
  • Even Sheryl Sandberg had a mentor who she met at Harvard
  • Sheryl’s mentor was Larry Summers, who later appointed her as a chief of staff when he became the U.S. Secretary of the Treasury in 2001

HBR: Best Mentors Think Like Michelangelo

  • A great mentors can spot their mentee’s potential before they can see it for themselves
  • The role of that mentor is to then provide the support system and affirmation to help their mentee reach and activate that potential
  • Two kinds of affirmations: perceptual and behavioral

Outreach Strategies

  • For young people, the two best places to find mentors are at the workplace and school
  • Once you’re comfortable, start reaching out to people who inspire you through online platforms
  • Outreach email should include three core things to increase the likelihood of getting a response
  • Quality follow-ups is key to maintaining a healthy relationship with your mentor

Challenge

  • By the end of today, think and jot down the name of 1-3 people you’ve been wanting to reach out to
  • By the end of this week, reach out to these people using our three-step outreach approach
  • By the end of this month, set up and go to at least one coffee or phone chat
  • Keep me updated about your challenge by sending me a message here
