As we continue in the series "The Real Miracle", we look at an intense moment between Jesus and the Pharisees. Jesus was about mercy; the Pharisees were about justice. The issue here is justice never fixes anything, it doesn’t change the situation, it doesn’t redeem the two parties. We see this example this week with a man with a withered hand who was in the temple. They knew he was in the temple and the Pharisees used him as a prop, which means they didn’t care about him or his healing; they cared about looking pious. Jesus comes along and breaks all their manmade rules because he is about healing, even on their sacred sabbath.…

What they don’t know is they are in the minority! Most cultures believe in the supernatural realm and look to it for guidance and also to be aware of its dangers. There is a misconception in our culture that getting older automatically makes you wiser. Or, take that one step further, that age has to do with maturity. The New Testament talks a lot about becoming mature Christians but, unfortunately, we have made maturity simply morality. However, maturity is more of a spiritual place of being rather than what you do or don’t do. The main thing mature Christians do is see the spiritual side of things, the real things, and not get distracted by the ways of the world only dealing in the flesh.…
There are many names for Jesus, and there are many different characteristics to Jesus, but there’s one that we don’t think about enough: Friend. Jesus told his disciples before he went to the cross, which was going to be one of the most traumatic experiences of their lives, that "I no longer call you slaves but friends." Oftentimes we think so much about Jesus’ Divinity, we forget about his humanity, and that he is also the perfect friend. What we know about humanity is that it is in our low points, our struggles, when we are lost, that we need a friend the most. Jesus is our most important friend.…

Dylan converted from Judaism to Christianity in the '70s and that didn’t go over well in the music industry, but it did give him some great insight into the spiritual world. His song “Gotta Serve Somebody” is simple, yet deep, as it cuts through the moral hierarchy of society. We all serve someone.…
On Easter Sunday, or Paschal, which is the real name, we looked at a song by Bob Marley called "Redemption Song". The main theme of the Bible can be summed up in one word: redemption -- but not just redemption of our bodies and our spirits but also our minds. Marley saw his people living in slavery years after they no longer were in slavery, which shows often it is a mindset. Jesus died our death, defeated our sin, so that we may live with a brand new mindset of the world, ourselves, and God.…

Palm Sunday is more than a one-time occurrence. It’s a model of who God is. Jesus didn’t pick a white horse, He picked a little colt. He didn’t pick a victory speech, He stayed silent. He didn’t bring the sword, He went to the cross. He truly is the Prince of Peace. He is our model for it.
We kick off "iTunes Jesus: B-Sides" with the quiet Beatle, the mystical Beatle -- George Harrison. Harrison was a seeker of God, and although he claimed Hinduism, he was very sympathetic to Christ, and you can hear his journey through his song "Hear Me Lord". If you read the Psalms, you will realize this song is a song written from himself to himself.…

Jesus is the Physician. He healed the sick and all kinds of physical problems but his healing goes SO much deeper than that.

One of the tragedies of the western church mindset is that we have taken the word "discipleship" and made it all about knowing facts about the Bible. Basically, we have fallen into the trap of thinking our theology is what saves us, but the reality is theology leads us to Jesus who is the one who saves us. The issue with this is nobody has perfect theology, and so if facts save us, then we're all in trouble. Pastor Scott lays out what true discipleship is in three simple ways: understanding the spirit in the Bible, our community groups, and serving Jesus. We are not called to know about Jesus, we are called to follow Jesus’ ways. That is what equals discipleship.…
God gave Moses 10 Commandments but that wasn’t enough. By the time Jesus came, there were over 600 Commandments and it didn’t change a thing. Jesus tells them He didn’t come to abolish the law but fulfill it -- but how? This has caused great confusion and created a law-based approach to the gospel. This reformation is relearning what love means, Jesus love, Godly love. Zootown believes in the law, but the law of love is greater.…

Pastor Scott wraps up this Advent season by telling everybody what would really honor Jesus during Christmas…eat, chill, relax. So often Christians put a ton of pressure on trying to honor God during the Christmas season, but what we see that truly honors God is resting in His finished work.
Scott wraps up this Advent season with one of the main messages and clearest messages that Jesus gave us: be a peacemaker. He never said to be a peacekeeper, because peacekeeping is just trying to make everybody happy. Peacemaking is something that takes an effort, something you engage in, and something that will cost you. Usually it costs you your own tribe because you can’t be a peacemaker unless you call your own side out too. But in the end, there are no sides because we’re all sinners and we’ve all been given peace from God.…
In week three of Advent, we look at the shepherd's candle of joy, but Pastor Scott took a different route. Jesus gave us a clue to joy, but it’s not getting more stuff...it’s giving stuff up. It is not promoting ourselves, but denying ourselves. The kingdom of God is the opposite of the fleshly American way we’ve been taught, and the only way we find true joy is the Jesus way -- by picking up our cross daily.…
Week Two of Advent is the Bethlehem candle of faith. What is faith? How does it work? What are we having faith in? Pastor Scott looked up every passage that talked about faith and almost every single one of them says that the only thing we are really having faith in, which will equal assurance, is our inheritance in the kingdom of God. We are to have faith that, no matter what, God will save us.…
We kick off Week One of Advent with the candle of hope. It has been scientifically proven that hope is a survival mechanism that we have, and without it, we die. The Christian hope is more than just having a good life here, it’s showing that the greatest enemy - death - has already been defeated, and we will be resurrected in our Lord. We were told by both Paul and Peter that we are to comfort one another with these words.…
Pastor Scott ended this important series with the most important topic: redemption. There are lots of topics in the Scriptures, many moral decrees, but no topic is more affirmed or more mentioned than redemption. But you can’t mention redemption without atonement, and with many atonement theories, which one is correct? Which one represents the father‘s heart the best? Listen and find out.…
Jesus is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. He is prefigured in the sacrifice provided for Abraham, the Passover Lamb of the Exodus, and the suffering servant of Isaiah. He fulfills these types as the one through whom God provides a New Exodus from death to life. Jesus is referred to as the Lamb in Revelation more than any other book. Revelation is an incredibly difficult book to interpret yet we can see through its “central and centering vision” in ch. 4-5 that the two images of Lion and Lamb are forged inseparably together to represent our one Lord Jesus Christ. As Lamb he lays down his life as a self-sacrifice on our behalf while as Lion he conquers, “trampling down death by his death.” The Lion-Lamb, who alone is worthy, Jesus Christ is the Conqueror! Ἰησοῦς Χριστὸς Νίκα!…
Jesus makes a profound statement that no other prophet or leader has ever made: He is the way. Buddha never claimed to be the way; he said we have the way in us and we have to find it ourselves. Mohammed never claimed to be the way, but that in a revelation from God he can show the way. Only Jesus claimed not just to show the way or have the way but to be the way. Then he lays out the way in Matthew 5, 6, and 7 -- the kingdom way, the only way.…
As we continue in our series on the names of Jesus, we come to the name that we never think about with him: Friend. Some Christians have said that it’s rude, unholy, and disrespectful to call God your friend. But Jesus showed us that all great relationships start with friendship, and He even said "I don’t call you slaves, I call you friends." Just like any friendship, as it grows closer, it moves into a family relationship. Your best friend becomes your brother or your sister, and Jesus says He is our friend and our big brother.…

In the "My Name Is" series, Pastor Scott preached on Jesus being the High Priest -- the fulfillment of every high priest who’s ever lived. That message makes one wonder, "What does the high priest do?" This week we looked at Jesus being the judge; so not only is He a high priest mediating between us and God, but He is also in charge of the judgment. The fact is, in John 12, Jesus told us the cross was the judgment, sin and death are over, and now it’s what we do with the cross. This means that sin is off the table, but it doesn’t mean we won’t be judged by what we do with the grace of God.…
Every religion around the world has a high priest of sorts. This didn’t start with the Jewish people, but after the fall when man felt God needed appeasement. Jesus enters that man-made system but as a different high priest. A spiritual priest.
This week in the "My Name Is" series, we look at a phrase that St. Paul used a few times. It’s a phrase filled with mystery, depth, and hope. Jesus was called the “Last Adam” and one particular verse opens up a world of discovery: “As in Adam all die, as in Christ all live.” Does all mean…all?
In Week 2, Pastor Scott tackles a very important subject: Did Jesus claim to be God? Some sects of Christianity say no, and the Jews for sure say He wasn’t. But the fact is, our English translations have added a single word that has screwed everything up: He. Jesus always referred to himself as the “I AM” which is the name of God, but our translations have added “I am he.” That’s a big no-no because that is completely different from Jesus claiming to be God in whom we give our worship. The OT Kings were called “Christs” and it means “one anointed with oil to be separated for service to God.” There have been many “Little Christs” but only Jesus was the real deal.…

In this last episode of “The Road to Emmaus”, Pastor Scott brings it home with the opening of eyes. These men didn’t recognize Jesus, and they didn’t see the truth even from the scriptures. Only can our eyes be opened when we actually experience Christ. How do we do that? Communion.
In week two of “The Road to Emmaus”, Pastor Scott shows us that this road is the road we are all on. Sometimes we’re at mile “2” and other times mile “5”. Jesus showed these guys grace, and us grace, no matter what part of the journey we’re on.

Pastor Scott’s mentor, Father Andrew Jarmus, graced us with his presence to share “the faith handed down to us.” Some of this sounds new to Evangelicals, but in fact it’s old. One of our goals at Zootown is to bring both together and this was a huge step.
In week two of the “The Real Miracles” we look at a woman who was ostracized from the community she loved for 12 years because she had a blood disorder. In those days if you were sick, you were unclean, you couldn’t touch people, and if you did, they had to go wash everything they owned. She lived in a terrible existence of isolation. However, she heard of this Jesus guy who healed people and never turned anyone away, so she boldly goes to see him. She is such a great example to us, that no matter what sickness or sin we have, no matter what people have said to us about us, that is not the heart of God.…
One of Jesus’ main parts of his ministry was healing. We have recorded history that these miracles took place and continue to this day. But why did he do it? Obviously because he loves people, but why worry about our bodies if they’re sinful and will be resurrected someday anyhow? The Bible is spiritual, yes, it is history in some sense, but its main point is to direct our souls. If you look at Jesus’ miracles, there was more going on than it seems. If you read it in the spiritual sense, he was healing more than just their legs. This series dives into that as we look at the real reason behind these miracles.…
We wrap up our five-week series on the vision of Zootown with the next phases of our building project. There is no real timeline for it other than when the money comes in, but this answers the why are we doing it question. Every generation is worried about the next generation that is being raised. What they miss is we are the ones raising them! There is so much cynicism regarding the youth of America right now, and we don’t want to fall into that. We want to be bridge builders, peacemakers, creators for our children’s future. We also have other plans for office space and functionality of the building, which is all discussed in this final episode.…

With all these churches closing that means there is a lot of real estate out there and many of these fallen churches are becoming community centers. As we continue our series on our fundraising campaign, we focused the first two weeks on vision. Who are we, what are we doing here, and where are we going. This third week is looking at the hard numbers for what this will cost and why it’s important to design this building the way we did. We kick off the new series “The Burbs” by talking about who we are as a Church. Right now, we are in the middle of a building expansion project but why are we doing it? We see the new building as a byproduct of the new reformation we are going through in the Church. However, every reformation has a little bit of old and a little bit of new. We can get this building done and still be the same, but we want this place to be a guidepost, a map, a light to Missoula to find their way to Christ.…

“Pastor Scott wraps up his series on the fire passages by bringing it all together in one place: Judgement. Nobody likes it, for sure not feeling it, even though we do like giving it out. Judgment is a scary word to most; it feels like you’re sitting in front of a judge to be condemned. One of the issues though is we take our human perspective of judgment and put that on God, but the Bible has a different view of the final judgment. It doesn’t make it less serious, it just means the purpose of God’s judgments are different. We can’t cover it all but Scott gives it his best shot in this final episode of Fire Season.”…
This week we look at two terms that don’t normally go together but have the same spiritual connotations: salt and fire. The Gospel of Mark gives an encounter where Jesus is really serious, almost scary, but Jesus always has a purpose in mind. He says “Everyone will be salted with fire, but salt is good.” Salt has many helpful qualities, but one specific with fire in that it purifies things. But how does it do it? By just being salt and doing what it does. Jesus has a purpose for our lives in the world, to bring out the flavor and purity. But are we known for that?…
As we continue to look at the purpose of fire in the Scriptures this week, we piggyback off the previous week of "Purified". In order for something to be purified, it first has to be exposed for what it is. All of our lives have two different natures: a sin nature but also a love nature that is totally secure in God. The sin nature is exposed by the love of God, but for the true nature, the God nature is to be revealed. Being exposed is not a pleasant experience, just like a doctor exposing a wound can be painful. Yet it is necessary for the wound to be healed. The Fire of God’s love is necessary in our lives not to hurt us, but to heal us.…
No matter what currencies are doing in the world, silver and gold have been the constants throughout time. Yet they both must be tested for their purity before they can be truly valued. In order to see the real from the fake, it is tested on a rock called the touchstone. This leaves a streak to compare it to the real gold. The gold and silver are also heated up in fire so that the dross can rise to the surface and be wiped away in order for it to be purified and shined. This week we look at these concepts to see what the scriptures mean by “God’s purifying fire.”…
We say we have 6 seasons in Montana: Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter, Road Construction, and Fire Season. The smoke is no fun to deal with but it’s vital to the forest's growth. Fire touches everything it comes across, it changes everything it touches, and it consumes the dead but uses the good.
Pastor Scott wraps up the series with giving concrete ways for continued spiritual growth. Just like our muscles must be worked out, pushed, broken down, our spiritual muscles are the same. Just like physical workouts, there is a lot of advice on how to work out our spirits, however there are time-tested ways given to us by the ancient Christians that have proved fruitful for thousands of years.…
Everyone falls, everyone stumbles, everyone gets into a pit. Sometimes it’s a pit others have dug, but often it’s a pit we have dug. Our choice is to stay in the pit and keep digging deeper, or turn and look to the Lord to pull us out.
