It is often said that Booker T. Washington was one of the most misunderstood leaders in America. If one, however, examines closely his actions, philosophy, accomplishments and results, one will not question the quality of his leadership. How was it possible for Washington to achieve any level of leadership success having lived under the cloud of “chattel slavery” the most brutal system of oppression that the world has ever none? What was it about Washington’s agenda and philosophy that impressed the likes of the honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey to take the approach he did in building the United Negro Improvement Association?
