Misty Copeland is the first African American woman to be promoted to principal dancer in The American Ballet Theater's 75-year history. She is considered a dance prodigy even though she didn't begin ballet until she was 13. At the age of 15 she won first place in the Music Center Spotlight Awards and would study at the prestigious, American Ballet Theatre and has been with them ever since.
Not only is she an incredible ballerina, Misty is also public speaker and a celebrity spokesperson that understands how powerful and impactful her voice is for young black girls aspiring to be the first in their fields.
