In this episode of My Invisible Disease, Jenny and Kassy are Bitter Bettys. With chronic illness and a short fuse, they desperately seek to strike a balance between protecting themselves, maintaining empathy and compassion, and avoiding petty complaints as they navigate the holidays and a mountain of obligations.
This episode is about Self-reflection on communication styles. Through listening to two moms sharing their struggles and experiences with chronic illness, I learned about the importance of self-care and balancing empathy and compassion for others with the need to be selfish and take care of oneself. Through humorous anecdotes and thoughtful conversations, this episode highlights the need to check in with ourselves and be mindful of how we respond to conversations, particularly when it comes to gossip and complaints that may not be relevant.
"It's funny that you say that cause I have honestly been in such a bad mood for the last two days. Like I don't even know what it is."
In this episode, you will learn the following:
1. How do two moms with chronic illness manage the stress of the holidays?
2. How can we practice empathy and compassion for others in difficult times?
3. How can we recognize and manage our own levels of self-absorption and pettiness?

Kassy: I have been in such a bad mood for the last two days. Holidays are stressful, even though I don't know why I'm stressed about the holidays. Now that my kids are older, they're comparing elf stories at school and the expectations are much higher.
[00:06:51]
We are just surviving, getting the kids out of the house. This morning, for my kids, I was grouchy. Sitting and talking with you today has made me feel so much better. There is so much to do with community.
[00:10:27]
Sometimes when you're in a Bitter Betty mood, it can be a little bit harder to do some of those things like show up over the holidays and get together with people. Jenny says she has to be able to carry empathy and compassion for other people. How do you manage that mental, emotional side of what you're willing to tolerate?
[00:17:46]
In -30 as soon as I get a chill it sticks to me and I'm painfully sore for the rest of the day. Another key that I might try today a little bit journaling. Journaling helps me dump my mind so I'm not overthinking things.
[00:19:31]
Let's challenge our listeners. What can they do to shake off their bad moods? How can we get our day back on track? We want you to join our Facebook group.
